Dominic Calvert-Lewin believes Everton can take confidence from Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City.
The reverse at Goodison Park means the Toffees have now lost four of their last five matches across all competitions, although they competed well with the Premier League champions, who only wrapped up the three points in second-half stoppage time.
Calvert-Lewin was deployed as the lone striker during the match and, despite failing to get on the scoresheet, he feels both he and the team can take confidence from their performance into Saturday’s clash with Watford at Vicarage Road.
“Despite the result, we have to be proud of ourselves,” Calvert-Lewin told the Everton website. “Everyone, to a man, put in a good shift. “We’ll take confidence from the performance and take that into Saturday. We will give our all again to win that game.”
Wednesday’s result leaves Marco Silva’s team ninth in the standings and they have now played a game more than all the sides around them in the table.
Calvert-Lewin insists the Toffees cannot worry about other teams, however, as they must remain solely focused on their own performances. “We have to just focus on making sure we finish as high as we can,” the 21-year-old added.
“We know the quality we have in the team. “It’s just a matter of putting it together on the pitch, building confidence and believing in ourselves.”
