Nigeria’s D’Tigers suffered their third consecutive defeat at the AfroBasket 2025 qualifiers in Tunisia, after losing to Cape Verde, in their Group B game on Sunday.
Going into the game on the back of defeats against Libya and Uganda, D’Tigers succumbed to a 78-62 loss.
The Nigerian men’s team took the first quarters 24-16 but lost the second, third and fourth quarters 23-9, 21-18 and 18-11 respectively.
D’Tigers will take on Libya in the second window of the AfroBasket qualifiers on 21 February, 2025.
The team almost did not partake in the qualifiers due to lack of funds and played all their three qualifiers with only nine players.
The AfroBasket 2025 qualification will be played from February to November 2024, to determine the 16 nations who will qualify for the FIBA AfroBasket 2025.

This may sound harsh, but good for the NBBF.
We have gotten away with wishy washy fire brigade approach towards participating in tournaments far too long. And this does not apply only to basket ball, but to our sports all round.
We couldn’t even manage to present a complete team of 12 players for the qualifying tournament.
We keep relying on a phantom “Nigerian Spirit” that is dead long ago, when sports administrators loot funds without thinking of the “Nigerian sprit”
We believe we have the sole custody of talents in the world, and hence do not need to prepare to face our opponents, as if they have been sleeping since the 80s.
Qualification for the Afro Basket has now become something we need to put into fasting and prayers, just because those who are meant to do their jobs are clueless.
An one political handbag is busy eulogizing the Sports Minister for doing NOTHING….absolutely NOTHING beyond the barest minimum, but gallivanting all over the place since he was appointed.
What a shame…! Waht a country…!
Lol. A whole Nigeria, African basketball giants and multiple winners of continental championship, has become the whipping boys to even countries like Uganda and Cape Verde.
What would then happen with Senegal, Angola, and Mali?
All cos of shoddy preparations so bad that cor the first match and loss, they went straight to the court from the airport. No training.
PATHETIC.
This why I call them pussy team. If you’re not the best and you get called up my humble advice is always to decline and save your the insults from fans. How can we explain Nigeria loosing to average African teams in Basketball??? NBBF president should give an explanation aside the fire brigade approach how did we get here loosing to Libya Uganda and Capeverde???
Was it not started from the time of Buhari or last sports commissioner of Nigeria that stated that we will not use overseas players for Basketball we have the Nigerian Talent fulll in the coutry even pulling out from a WC we qualified with flying colours because we had too many NBA Stars and European stars in our team they wanted a local team. well what did we expect this is always the result When who is blessed stupidly and continuously shoot themselves in the foot. Rubbish mentality country
