Former Liverpool assistant Zeljko Buvac is reportedly the leading candidate for the managerial post at Schalke.
Buvac started his managerial career with Neukirchen in 1998, spending three seasons at the helm before agreeing to link up with former team-mate Jurgen Klopp at Mainz in 2001.
The 57-year-old worked as Klopp’s assistant at Mainz and then followed the German to Borussia Dortmund and eventually Liverpool.
He left his role as assistant with the Reds just days before they met Roma in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final last May.

After being linked with a number of different clubs over the last few months, he appears to be closing in on a return to management.
Schalke are seeking a permanent successor to Domenico Tedesco, having placed Huub Stevens in temporary charge, and reports in Germany claim negotiations are underway with Buvac. Former Huddersfield boss David Wagner has also been named as a potential candidate.
