John Obi Mikel is undergoing a medical at Middlesbrough ahead of signing for the Championship club.
According to SunSport, the former Chelsea midfielder, 31, travelled from London to the north-east yesterday after agreeing personal terms.
Two-time Premier League winner Mikel is set to join the Championship club after spending the past two years at Tianjin TEDA in the Chinese Super League.
Roma and Wolfsburg registered an interest but the Nigerian international wanted to return to England, where his wife and two young children are based.
Mikel will be part of a Tony Pulis side looking to bring Premier League football back to the Riverside next season.

Boro currently sit fifth in the Championship table and seven points off leaders Leeds.
Tony Pulis believes Mikel can help propel Boro’s promotion push
Mikel hasn’t played for Nigeria since last summer’s World Cup. He has been encouraged to return to the national scene ahead of this summer’s Africa Cup of Nations, but only regular playing time at club level will guarantee him a place in the team, according to Nigeria coach, Gernot Rohr.
Mikel played more than 350 games for Chelsea during his 11-year stay at Stamford Bridge winning two Premier League titles, three FA Cups, the League Cup, Champions League and Europa League.

Very discouraging move. Phew¡!!!!
Even Ashley Cole just signed for Derby in the same division. We have to be realistic. It’ll be hard to find a premiership club that will take an ageing midfielder.
Not bad move for him really cos he had won most of trophy’s most players would have dreamed of winning, Middlesbrough is trying to get players so they can promote to the premier league. Championship is also hard to play in even though all of them are aren’t big boys
