Mercedes chief Toto Wolff feels it is right that Lewis Hamilton should be someone who divides opinion as it spices up Formula 1. Hamilton is currently leading the 2019 Drivers’ Championship having picked up his seventh race win of the year at the British Grand Prix.

The Briton leads Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas by 39 points and is well on his way to a sixth F1 crown. The 34-year-old appears a popular man in most circles but has been criticised in some sections for his celebrity lifestyle. Wolff does not believe that is a bad thing as it would make for a dull sport if everyone was the same.
“For me many of the best sports stars in the world, they polarise,” he told Motorsport.com. “You will have heard similar comments about Serena Williams. Half of the people love her and want her to win everything, and the other ones cheer for the opponents. “And I think you’d rather polarise than be down the middle and boring. That’s my opinion.”
