England all-rounder Chris Woakes admits there is a huge amount of competition for places for the World Cup. Participating nations have until May 23 to finalise their 15-man squads for the upcoming tournament in England and Wales.
A number of England players have been keen to take their chance in recent weeks, most notably Jofra Archer, who has performed admirably in the ODI series versus Pakistan so far as well as the T20 international against the same opposition, as he looks to force his way into the final reckoning.
Woakes has been named in the preliminary 15-man squad for the summer showpiece and has played well in recent matches, taking 4-67 in the six-wicket win over Pakistan in the third ODI on Tuesday, with his record now standing at 121 wickets in 87 ODI appearances.

Despite ongoing uncertainty around World Cup selection, Woakes insists that there is no feeling of anxiety in the dressing room. “Someone, unfortunately, will miss out, but we do not sit in the dressing room talking about, “is it going to be me?”, “is it going to be you?,” he told the ICC. “I think everyone knows it is there and it is creating a good competitive edge to the team, but we do not talk about who is going to miss out and who is going to be selected.”
