Atlas Lions of Morocco striker Ayoub El Kaabi was the hero, as his late extra-time goal helped Olympiacos edge Fiorentina 1-0 in the final of the Europa Conference League in Athens on Wednesday.
Olympiacos is now the first-ever Greek club to win a European trophy.
Also, their win means Greece become the 20th country to have a club win a major European trophy.
It is another heartbreak for Fiorentina who also conceded a late goal to lose 2-1 to West Ham in last season’s final of the Europa Conference League.
Fiorentina’s only European trophy was the now defunct Cup Winners’ Cup which they won in 1961.
With the game drifting towards penalty shootout, Olympiacos eventually found the breakthrough in the 116th minute as El Kaabi headed home a cross from the left.
There was a lengthy check by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for a potential offside by El Kaabi and after a nervy wait the goal was eventually given.
