Nigerian forward Olamilekan Lawal scored one of the goals for Egyptian club Al Mostaqbal Sport Club in their 3-2 away loss at Porto Suez at the Egyptian Army Stadium on Friday to underline his growing influence in the land of the Pharaohs.
Lawal, formerly on the books of Olympic FC of Alexandria where he made a name for himself, has become the mainstay of the modest second division and scored the second goal via a powerful header which ensured a frantic end to the exciting game against Porto Suez who moved to 11th spot with the result.
The former Giant Brillas of Enugu striker hopes his goalscoring form will attract the attention of U-23 Eagles coach Salisu with the team already qualified for the next round of the AFCON qualifier after a 3-1 aggregate win over Tanzania.
“My desire is to be part of the team that will secure Nigeria’s ticket for the Paris 2024 Olympics Football Tournament and I want to do everything within my power to be invited to the team,” he said.
Lawal took a devastating pre-season form where he notched five goals and three assists for Al Mostaqbal into the current campaign and is determined to make a difference for his new team.
The final qualifying leg of the U23 AFCON has pitched Nigeria against Guinea with the first leg billed for the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan on 19th March, 2023 and the return leg in Conakry a week later and Lawal would be hoping to get the call from coach Salisu Yusuf to be part of the squad to win the ticket for a place in Morocco next year.
