Nigeria’s Flamingos have crashed out of the FIFA U-17 women’s World Cup in Dominican Republic, after losing 2-0 to the USA In the quarter-finals on Saturday.
Goals in each half from Kennedy Fuller and Kimmie Ascanio secured the win for the Americans.
Fuller gave USA the lead with two minutes left in the first half before Ascanio added the second goal.
The win for the Americans was a revenge for their ouster against the Flamingos at this same stage in the 2022 edition in India.
The Flamingos shocked the Americans as they edged them on penalty shootout to reach the semi-finals and go on to finish third.
In the group stage, the Nigerian team finished top after wins against New Zealand, Ecuador and Dominican Republic.
For the USA, they lost 3-1 to champions Spain but won their second and third games to progress into the quarter-finals.

Las Las the ladies who used to give us joy in cadet football have joined their male counterparts to become also-rans.
Well, they are playing to NFF pattern – more home based players for “marketing” rather than seeking talents anywhere and everywhere.
I have not seen the next Oshoala or Plumptre yet.
South Africa just lost 5-0 to a “quality opposition” that will give them something to think about. They are playing England next. See the “exposure” on cue but ours is comfort zone.
I hope this flamingoes coach steps aside. I wish for turnovers for our coaches in cadet teams so that legacies will be cemented. If you do well, stay again for another “season”. If not, step aside.
Just as there is a turnover of cadet talents, so it should be with the coaches.
Today’s game was bereft of “tactics number 2” (plan b or plan c is too over flogged lol)
See the number of shots on target.
over-confidence killed this team
My dear brother,
Watch the trend in our football outings.
Any time we win all the group matches we crash out in the quarter finals but if we win one, draw one and lose one, we go all the way to the finals.
That is our rituals before we succeed
No to put too fine a point on it, the Flamingos pattern of play was truly horrendous in the night.
Their passing routines carried no purpose.
They lacked imagination needed to carve out credible chances.
They were an embarrassment to themselves in launching aimlessly with long balls.
They were grotty in defence, gimcrack in attack and gewgaw in midfield which is why they are now gone from the competition.
Whilst I lauded them in the group stages for their barnstorming performance, a perilously soft underbelly was just peeking out.
By the prickling of my thumb, I worried this team would lack the tactical nutrients to nourish their way through the technically demanding knock out stage against formidable opponents.
And they would collapse at the first hurdle.
Indigenous Nigerian coaches can be tactically awful. It was really hard to decipher a gameplan worthy of unsettling the Americans from Nigeria yesterday.
