‘This Is Our Turning Point’  –Akwa United Assistant Coach, Umar, After United’s 2-0 Win Over Pillars

Akwa United Assistant Coach Abdullahi Umar was elated Sunday evening as his team snapped their winless streak in the 2024/2025 NPFL season with a 2-0 victory over Kano Pillars in a tense Matchday Six encounter at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, Completesports.com reports.

Speaking after the game in the absence of Head Coach Mohammed Baba Ganaru, who travelled to Katsina immediately after the final whistle, Umar expressed that the win would boost the Promise Keepers’ morale and instil a “winning mentality” in the players.

Endurance Ebedebiri gave the home side the lead with a header just before half-time, while Friday Apolos sealed the victory with a brilliant strike nine minutes from full time, leaving Kano Pillars with no chance of recovery.

Umar described the victory as a turning point for Akwa United, who had endured a tough start to the season with a five-game winless run.

“I told the players during our prematch talk that every team will face setbacks in a 38-game season. We’ve had ours, and with today’s win, I believe we’ve overcome that phase,” Umar said.

He added: “Our setback is behind us. We’ve got the winning mentality, and we need to maintain that moving forward.”

The delighted coach concluded: “This win is a morale booster. It’s what we needed to bring the winning mentality back to the team. Congratulations to Akwa United.”
