The Super Eagles moved up four places to 32nd position in the latest FIFA world ranking released on Thursday morning, reports Completesports.com.
The three-African champions are also now the third best team in Africa behind newly crowned AFCON champions the Terangha Lions and the Atlas Lions of Morocco.
The West Africans won all three group matches against Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Austine Eguavoen’s side however crashed out in the second round after going down to a 1-0 defeat to the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia.
The Super Eagles were ranked 36th and fifth best team in Africa heading to competition but still moved up in the ranking despite their exit in Cameroon.
Algeria and Tunisia, who were ranked higher than the Super Eagles in the world and on the continent had a dismal campaign at AFCON 2021.
Algeria exited at the group stage with one draw and two defeats from three games, while Tunisia recorded two wins and two defeats.

…The EGUAVOEN effect.
I read through all the previous Post. But where are those that said Nigeria LL go down in Fifa ranking after the Afcon?
Good to know. Maybe tiki-taka pays off after all. Let’s heat things up a bit and head off to Ghana.
Welldone Egu
The fact that a team we outplayed got to the finals and went all the way to the penalties probably boosted our ranking…Beating Ghana will also help as WCQ have high points too.
Tunisia had three defeats and not two pls. Lost to Mali, Gambia and Burkina faso
Eguadiola will definitely take us to 2nd soon
Winning 3 games (emphatically and with flair I might added) does yield unexpected dividends after all.
Thanks to members of the Super Eagles coaching crew that made this upward climb in FIFA rankings possible.
This good news, but was just wondering if Nigeria is Tunisia, by now the write up here would have be something like…FIFA is crazy for rating Nigeria above Tunisia who defeated us. This just show us that lots of things are put into consideration for this rating, so when next the rating against us. We should not take ooo.
Tunisia lost three games in five matches while Nigeria lost one in four matches. Let’s do the points count:
Tunisia
Games played: 5
Games won: 2
Games lost: 3
So out of possible 15 points, Tunisia got only 6
Nigeria
Games played: 4
Games won: 3
Games lost: 1
Out of possible twelve points, Nigeria got nine.
How exactly should Tunisia be above Nigeria?
Bros,
The points are not just as straight forward as you have put it up there. There other coefficients that comes into play not just points picked up in a game. One team displacing another also gat to do with by how many points they were behind or ahead in the first place. Pls get on FIFA website, I think I have seen it there before sometime ago.
I hope the your logic work when it affect us
Afcon cameroon is gone, oyes it’s gone. Fifa realized that the Senegalese referee that officiated cheated us. Even with 10 men on the pitch, S.E is going to defeat Tunisia any day. Eguavoen started with good news and that’s accumulating. Everyone on the team should take his philosophy to imbibe it to every football playing Nigerian be they in the tertiary institutions and or village selected sides. My gut feeling tells me that the current coaching crew has started making a statement and it needs to continually up it. Good luck S.E.
It is as a result of the trust and support the President Amaju Pinnick led NFF gave the Eagles. Special thanks should also go to the Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Sunday Dare and not forgetting the ever supporting Super Eagles die-hard fans who have so much faith in this present crop. Shame to those who were writing letters to Iwobi and Okoye. God bless Nigerians.
Three straight wins in group stage no be beans o. The same Egypt that made it all the way to final were completely overran by Super Eagles. Eguaveon na beta coach abeg. He needs to crown his good start by beating Ghana to World Cup ticket.
Nonetheless, Eguaveon was outdone by a poor-goalkeeper and yielding to Iwobi’s pressure, instead of introducing Nwakali (who has better shooting, delivery and decisive-passes). It’s still painful that Nigeria lost to Tunisia but the consolation is that we’ve recovered our playing identity. Eguaveon only needs to learn how to manage games.
@Dr. Drey, my brother where you dey nah? Oya come outside, we need to talk lol
Nwakali is good but not yet ripe for the senior team, at least we saw what he could offer in cameroon having played in almost every match. Amoo has a better composure and work rate.
A number 10 player is expected to shoulder the midfield, dribbles with confident and carry it with good ball distribution. Nwakali is lacking in those areas. He gets the ball and immediately pass it on to his colleagues whether they are free or not, that isn’t expected of a modern day midfielder, so he was minus one in cameroon. It takes an expertise to see that. Okocha as a midfielder would ensure a player is completely free before releasing the ball and not the schoolboys stuff. I think would also prefer Akin Amoo most especially that the SE is not a training group. Eguavoen must get Akin for us.
You are spot on. I think our coaching crew now have options. Importantly, they must eschew sentiments in their selection because we can’t afford to toy with the Black Stars.
Congratulations to our own. This is very wonderful. Our own had a week training with the players and this happened. Kai, what else do you people want from our indigenous coaches?
Although, I’m not a FIFA ranking fan because I don’t believe in FIFA ranking thing but I believe in what Super Eagle can do on the pitch.
On the other hand, it is a pity that none of Oga Rohr followers that used to celebrate the FIFA ranking during Mr. Rohr’s tenure are not coming out today to celebrate the same FIFA ranking with our own. What a pity.
They preferred Oyinbo to their own people. Slave mentality. Like Amaju like Oga Rohr followers.
Congratulations to Mr. NO nonsense and his crew. I am proud of you all. God bless Nigeria!!!
Just an observation, Omo Onidodo.
This is the man you accused of eating sweet dodo. You said he has eaten sweet dodo, so his integrity is compromised.
You are now changing mouth, pretending as if you have always supported him!
Yesterday, you accused him of eating sweet dodo. Today, he’s YOUR OWN.
Hmmm. It’s alright. Go on soun!
Just saw this piece of good news;
https://twitter.com/SSE_NGA/status/1491784002272841730?t=Nd1_xLDo-34JDwzMfngb_Q&s=19
The news of the year!!! Welcome Ademola Lookman.
Which one is tikitaka here and Weldone Eguavon?? Come on don’t be ridiculous guys.. what do you expect? Why the noise? We won all the group games and lost just one. There are more points there. You don’t expect teams that lost or drew(after 90minites) more games to go higher than us in the fifa ranking..
And please give some credit to roah for assembling the boys.
@Monkey Post, get your fact right, Rhor did not assemble the boys. The boys are Nigerian and they have showed their capability in the youth level. Osimhen, Nwakali, Ndidi, Etebo were all not discovered by Rhor. Simon was first called by Oliseh with Sylvester Igbohun. Ighalo played in the youth and was an established player in Watford. All the defenders were not discovered by Rhor. Rhor just came and was lucky to find good players on ground. So, don’t come and be spewing incorrect statement here and making it look white coaches are better. Your Rhor has coached other African countries with lesser talent before Nigeria but failed woefully. Rhor is not that inetlligent bro.
Thannk for at least hailing Eguavoen for the first time though. I guess you did not have a choice, lol
Alhamdulillah for this good news and i hope it is a reality and not a fiction just like in the past…..
One edge Ademola has over our present super eagles wingers is that he can play no.10 very well another side of his qualities is that he can shoot obviously with both leg and right…
Whichever position he is featured, Lookman is an Adept creative player who mostly plays with the team… He is a high pressing player unlike Moses Simon he has a good crossing abilities..
I can wait to watch the super eagles play with the line-up below:
………….Okoye…………..
Aina….Ekong….. Akpoguma…..Zaidu
….Yusuf…….Ndidi……. Aribo
….Lookman…Osimehn…….Simon
Bench:
Dennis
Chukwueze
Ejuke
Musa
Iheanacho
Sadiq
Awoniyi
Dessers
Onyeka
Bonke
Awaziem
Ebuehi
Bassey
Ozornwafor
Uzoho
@Abdul spot-on, your starting 11 looks impressive but it can be improved by replacing Ekong with Balogun. Ekong is currently having a hard time @ Watford. He was not even considered for the match day squad in their last match..
@Handsy,
I like this your line up but I prefer Uzoho on post than Okoye.
From my observation, it’s defenders that’s shielding Okoye. Super Eagles always conced funny goals anytime Nigeria defenders are not up to the task.
If it’s Okoye that’s on post during the second match at afcon, even if Nigeria won Okoye wouldn’t have been able to keep clean sheet.
Which Okoye? Allah kia ye
Nigerian people have sworn to harm Okoye if he steps his bloody foot to play for Nigeria again. Don’t say l didn’t warn him ooo. In Europe, they call him ‘Okoye baskets’. Uzoho or Adeleye are the best we have. Amoo Akin is far better than Sam Chukwieze by a mile.
Abeg forget that thing. Who harmed Peter Rufai when he was the worst keeper at France ’98? Who harmed Enyeama when he cost us 2006 World Cup ticket against Angola? Okoye is not the best but anyone threatening to harm him should be picked up by Police and dumped at Kpanti Prison, rubbish
Good news!!! Ademola Lookman has been approved by fifa. Nff please go for Michael olise. The young boy is destiny for greatness. He will practically solve our attacking midfield problems. He can shot, assist, dribble, good at set pieces, has long range pass, very creative and above all still very young.
He is the real deal!!!
Super Eagles Shoot Up In FIFA Ranking is worth celebrating though I’m challenging the Eguavoen crew to take us to No1 in the World. It is possible.
@Mercy:
With reference to Michael Olise, the young lad is a skillful footballer but Kelechi Iheanacho will have to give way. Sincerely speaking, Olise is far better than Kelechi and I hope Eguavoen takes note.
George,
Number one in the World??? Bro, that is a tall dream. At least, number five after the World cup is okay. Remember Cerezo wouldn’t have spent up to a year in Qatar.
Congrats Cerezo for once again shaming your doubters with the upward movement of the Eagles on the ranking table.
That is an astute and tactically sound coach. It is FIFA way of recognising coach Eguavoen and his team. Good luck SE and God bless Nigerians.
Doubters? Those are already confirmed noise makers na. Coach Austin Eguavoen is already revamping the domestic league and I believe with an improvement from there, Super Eagles could further shoot up on FIFA ranking. Up up S.E!!!
(in) FIFA ranking
Is it Eguavoen’s that will revamp the league or NFF? If the local coaches were that good why haven’t the clubside been excelling in CAF organized competitions for clubs.Lest i forget,we couldn’t even qualify from the group stage of WAFU CUP.The local coaches and players should prove themselves at the league,WAFU,CHAN and CAF competitions for club just as Amodu Shuaibu did with various the clubs he handled.Until then i hold my reservations on the technical expertise of our local coaches and players.
Thanks to GENERAL ROAR for raising the bar.. Imagine him leaving us ranked at number 12 or 10, the points earned at this just concluded Afcon would have not been enough to move us to number 3. But he did a good job by leaving us ranked number 5.. so guys kudos to him for setting the standard..
But however it still doesn’t matter. What matters is the Afcon trophy and the manner at which we were eliminated. So embarrassing!!
Congratulations the Super Eagles of Nigeria. Obviously, you have done your fatherland proud. God bless Nigerians.
I joined others to congratulate you. Good luck SE.
@Tols Oga did you read me say roah discover them? I said assembled bro..Some of these boys were scattered around europe. Some even refused to play for their fatherland after your African guadiola(Oliseh) brought disunity to the squad. But roah gathered them together and under his guidance played a fatherly role.. thats my point. So Stop misquoting me
Congratulations to our own. This is very wonderful. Our own had a week training with the players and this happened. Kai, what else do you people want from our indigenous coaches?

Congratulations to Mr. NO nonsense and his crew. I am proud of you all. God bless Nigeria!!!
Coach Augustine Eguavoen get mouth.
Don’t mind them. Could not beat common Tunisia in round 16. FIFA rankings have been around before you were born. It is the only meter to judge Nations. Let’s see how they can beat Ghana and qualify us for FIFA World Cup before you can beat your chest just like male Monkey would do.
na Eguavoen get mouth. Go-to CAF and FIFA current ranking.
It’s a proof Super Eagles are getting it right.
@Dan,
That’s what I meant before noise intruded. Na Eguavoen get mouth o.
No you guys got it all wrong. there is no way the results of the just concluded AFCON would have been considered. These are the results of the World Cup and Nations Cup qualifiers. The AFCON result will kick in in the next FIFA ranking. So stop fooling yourselves.
Previous FIFA ranking was on the 23/12/2021, after Gernot was sacked. See the link below where you can check previous ranking dates in the drop down:
https://www.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/men?dateId=id13505
So, if the latest ranking was based on the qualifiers, there could not have been such progress from the previous position.
You are right @Neo. That was why I told them that GENERAL ROAH deserves the credit cos all the qualifiers happened during his time
Watching Udinese match now we have two Nigerian players in person of Isaac Success and Iyenume Udoje Destiny. Have not heard of the later name ,he was born in Italy . Isaac is delight to watch the way he hold the play with confidence ,he is very difficult to displace and he has been consistent.
