Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag, has told goalkeeper Andre Onana to start to show more consistency in his game ahead of today’s clash against Sheffield United.
Recall that Ten Hag brought in Onana this summer to replace David de Gea as United’s no.1 after the Spaniard’s contract expired.
But despite receiving praise for his distribution, Onana has come under fire after mistakes against Bayern Munich, Galatasaray and Brentford.
However, in a chat with TribalFootball, the Dutch tactician warned Onana to step up his game.

“‘For Andre, it is good to know, from that little bit of history, but also we live now and we live in the future. He has to make his future by making better performances.
“I’m sure he will do that and he has already shown that so many times in big clubs like Barcelona, when he was young. At Ajax, he was in the semi-final of the Champions League. He was in the final of the Champions League [last season with Inter],” Ten Hag said.
Onana is a sweeper-keeper who has strong distribution skills. He regularly comes out of his box to help build-up play and is known for his confidence on the ball and range of passing.
In Cameroon’s opening 2022 World Cup game against Switzerland, Onana had more touches of the ball outside of the box (26) than any goalkeeper in a World Cup match since records began in 1966.
He was described as resembling a “holding midfielder at times” in UEFA’s Technical Observers’ report on the 2022–23 Champions League.
In July 2023, he was described as “a modern keeper… with the technique of an outfield player”.
