The Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh has stated that there will be stiffer scrutiny of the constitutions governing Nigeria’s sporting federations in advance of the forthcoming elections.
This announcement follows Team Nigeria’s disappointing performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where the country did not secure any medals.
Senator Enoh, speaking from Paris, stated, “We did everything as a Ministry to prepare the athletes adequately and provide them with every financial support but unfortunately the performance has not produced any podium finish.”
He continued, “As we go back home we must do everything to prevent future occurrence of the Paris disaster and if this will entail the review of how people are elected to lead our sporting Federations, it will be done.”
Emphasizing the importance of upcoming federations’ elections, Senator Enoh noted, “I know that elections into the Federations are coming and it will be the perfect platform to get only those who have something to offer to lead the various sports.”
Reflecting on the complexity of these elections, he added, “I am aware that the Sports Federations Elections in Nigeria are even tougher than our National Elections and you will begin to ask yourself why is it so.”
The Minister concluded, “So for me as a Minister it is important I supervise an Elections where only the best hands will lead the various Federations and I also understand that in some of the Federations their constitutions will need to be reviewed for better inclusion.”
This call for reform aims to enhance the leadership and effectiveness of Nigeria’s sports federations, paving the way for improved performance on the global stage.

Dead and buried , Mr 442.
“I am aware that the Sports Federations Elections in Nigeria are even tougher than our National Elections and you will begin to ask yourself why is it so.”
I’ll tell you why elections into the different sports federations are a do or die affair. BECAUSE THE BILLIONS RELEASED FIE TRAINING TOURS ARE SHARED.
Most sports federation board members are not there cos they’re passionate about the sports or want to improve, it’s cos of the monies released to boards.
Starve them of the funds or let an independent handle financial matters and you’ll see no one to contest the elections.
So sir please go ahead and review the election criteria. Please don’t forget the most notorious ones: NTTF, AFN, NOC, NFF etc. NBBF ste still trying. We’re seeing the fruits.
Great points Kel.
@Kel NBF Still trying you said @kel, I am sorry did I miss something did D’Tigers play in the Olympics?.. Last I checked Buhari froze our NBA Players from the team including One of the stars of Boston Celtics that Won the league the past season.
What has Nigeria now become a country that realies on the female teams for World Recognition?. I think the faliures of our Sports have put some of you out of Touch with Reality NBF still trying what utter Rubbish as if D’Tigers were at the Olympics or last years Fiba World Cup.
Haba Ugo. E never reach like that na. I understand the need to blame a certain section of the country for everything that goes wrong even the weather but freezing out NBA stars? Abeg when Buhari do this one? First we all know Buhari could care less about sports. Infighting in the federation and the NBBF’s continued refusal to meet its obligations have led to the current predicament of D’Tigers. Also, please which player of the Boston Celtics’ championship team is eligible to play for Nigeria? The last I remember was Semi Ojeleye and he last played for the Celtics about 3 seasons ago.
