South African defender, Luke Fleurs, who played for Premier Soccer League side Kaizer Chiefs was shot dead on Wednesday night in a carjacking incident.
Fleurs’ death was confirmed by Kaizer Chiefs in a statement on Thursday.
It was gathered that the shooting took place at a petrol station in the Johannesburg suburb of Florida.
The 24-year-old was waiting to be attended to at the petrol station when the unknown gunmen approached him.
One of the suspects is reported to have fled the scene with the deceased car after the shooting.
“It is with a great deal of sadness that we announce that Kaizer Chiefs player, Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg,” Kaizer Chiefs stated.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
“The SAPS (South African Police Service) are handling the matter and further details will be communicated in due course.
“May his dear soul rest in peace.”

Fleurs was born in Cape Town. He made his National First Division debut aged 17 and made 18 league appearances in his first season of professional football.
He signed for SuperSport United on a long-term deal in summer 2018.
On 26 October 2023, he joined fellow Premiership side Kaizer Chiefs, signing a two-year contract with an option for a further year.
He featured for South Africa’s U-17 team and made five appearances in 2016.
Then in 2021, he represented South Africa U-23 side and played in four games.
He was called up to Bafana Bafana in 2021 and 2022. He, however, never made any appearance.
