Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave David de Gea a name-check when revealing a decision on Manchester United’s new captain will be made soon. With Ecuador international Antonio Valencia leaving the Red Devils this summer after the expiration of his contract, Solskjaer needs to appoint a new captain ahead of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign.
Englishman Ashley Young wore the armband at times last season while Frenchman Paul Pogba, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid and Juventus throughout the transfer window, also led the side out. Spanish goalkeeper De Gea has previously spoken about what an honour it would be to be handed the responsibility and, judging by the manager’s recent comments, he looks favourite to be named skipper.
“We’ve got different captain types,” he was quoted as saying by The Metro. “There are vocal leaders and players like David [De Gea], who has merit with what he’s done and he’ll play the majority of the games. “We’ll announce something soon.”
