Southampton youngster Callum Slattery says he was filled with pride after making his first Premier League start against Burnley.
The 19-year-old midfielder played the full 90 minutes of Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Turf Moor after being handed a chance to impress by manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.
Slattery had featured in the Premier League before, coming on as a substitute against Crystal Palace and Leicester, while he also played the full 90 minutes against Derby in the FA Cup last month.
However, the teenager felt making his first top-flight start was a particularly proud moment. “I’m very pleased,” he told the club website.
“It’s a proud day to get a full 90 in the Premier League and a first start, so it’s a great feeling, but it’s bittersweet not to come away with three points.”
The England under-20 international feels he is certainly thriving in the Southampton first-team and he has praised Hassenhuttl for giving himself, as well as fellow youngsters Yan Valery and Michael Obafemi, a chance to impress.
He added: “I’m loving it. We’re learning every day under the manager, and from being in and around the first-team boys. Hopefully we can keep kicking on.”
