Bangladesh beat Afghanistan by 62 runs at Southampton and are now just one point behind England in the World Cup table. Once again it was superstar all-round Shakib Al Hasan who proved to be the difference, with the 32-year-old scoring 51 before taking five wickets.
The Tigers posted 262-7 after being given first use of the pitch, with Mushfiqur Rahim’s 83 the top score. The wicket-keeper hit four fours and one six during his 87-ball knock, while Shakib hit just one four in his innings – knocking the ball around in tough conditions to accumulate his runs.
Mosaddek Hossain smacked 35 down the order and Mahmudullah hit 27, with it always looking a challenging target for Afghanistan to chase. Several Afghan players made contributions, with opener Gulbadin Naib scoring 47, while Rahmat Shah hit 24 and Asghar Afghan 20.
However the run-rate kept climbing as batsmen took too long to score their runs and, despite an unbeaten 49 by Samiullah Shinwari, they ended up losing by 62 runs. Shakib took 5-29 and Mustafizur Rahman claimed two scalps.
