Ajax coach Alfred Schreuder has admitted that his new defender, Calvin Bassey, was legitimately sent off on his debut for the club during the 2022 Johan Cruyff Shield clash with PSV Eindhoven on Saturday.
PSV defeated Ajax 5-3 on Saturday July 30 at the Johan Cruyff Arena Amsterdam to retain the Dutch Super Cup title – their 12th in history.
Steven Bergwijn shot Ajax into the lead on 15 minutes before Gus Til’s double netted on 32 and 47 minutes ensured that PSV led 2-1 at halftime.

22 year old Brazilian forward Antony equalised for the Eredivisie Champions Ajax on 54 minutes, then Cody Gakpo restored PSV lead with a 65th minute goal and Til completed his hattrick to extend the lead to 4-2.
Mohammed Kudus’ goal made it 4-3 for PSV in the 73rd minute, and Bassey was shown a red card six minutes later for a foul on Moroccan midfielder, Ismael Saibari.
The Centre Referee, Dennis Higler, earlier issued yellow card to Bassey, but VAR called for a review after which he decided it was a red card foul. And the Nigeria defender got the marching order after only 16 minutes in action having replaced Owen Wijndal in the 62nd minute.
Xavi Simons made it 5-3 for PSV in the 91st minute.

Schreuder opined that though Bassey’s tackle wasn’t deliberate it was deserving of a red card.
“In the end I think the red card was decisive,” thescottishsun.co.uk quoted Schreuder as saying.
“You felt we could go on and win it, but it’s always more difficult with one less man.
“I looked at the incident after the game and he certainly didn’t do it deliberately, but he’s gone in a little too wild.
“I admit a red card could have been given, and I understand why they gave it.”
Bassey made 50 appearances in all competitions for Rangers last season and recorded six assists.
He has made six appearances for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
He won the Scottish Cup last season with the Gers.
Ajax won the Eredivisie last season with 83 points from 34 games.

Of course Bassey got legitimate red card
. He is crude. He will learn. Bassey should watch videos of Jamilu Collins to learn how to make clean tackles.
You are trying so much to market a player who is not even confident with himself hence the league he went to as a free agent……Even Collins himself will read your comment and shake his head for you.
Don’t try to market a player out of the boring Dutch league. Even Bassey know he is not that good. The problem with Nigerians is that we like to market average players.
You know his transfer to Ajax (an European team) is Rangers transfer record right?
Bassey is a player of the future because of his age. For now, Jamilu Collins is his master.
Eh, I know hear you well, which kind master? You Sabi football so? Abeg keep this your talk to yourself. People go laugh you well, well if you repeat yourself
Jamiu is a player in his own class while at present Calvin Bassey is obviously ahead of Collins in football circle with the current trend in their chosen career. Bassey has moved above Jamiu recently,no doubt about Collins abilities on the field but Bassey has taken his football to the next high level.
Bassey can only get better. He will learn from senior footballers like Jamilu Collins.
