Newcastle’s Switzerland defender Fabian Schar is unfazed by the prospect of facing Cristiano Ronaldo in the Nations League semi-finals. Schar, 27, who made 24 Premier League appearances for the Magpies in the season just finished, is in the Switzerland squad set to take on Portugal in the first Nations League semi–final on Wednesday.

The winners will play either England or the Netherlands Sunday’s final and not many pundits have given the Swiss much hope. Vladimir Petkovic’s side have maybe punched above their weight to reach the last four and will take on a talented Portugal outfit at Porto’s Estadio do Dragao.

Not many things are in the Switzerland’s favour but Schar is happy to fly under the radar. “England are the form side, Portugal are at home and, of course, have Ronaldo, while Dutch football is on the rise,” he told the Daily Star. “So I cannot say who will win. All I can say is you will not hear anyone saying Switzerland can. “Everyone seems to write us off going into every tournament. But that suits us fine. We are the underdogs who always do well.”
