Egypt forward, Mohamed Salah has predicted that the team will lift the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
The seven-time AFCON champions are in Group D alongside Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Sudan. They will face the Super Eagles in the opening Group D fixture on January 11.
The Super Eagles have recorded eight wins and five draws in 18 games in all competitions against Egypt.
The forward came close to lifting the trophy in 2017, but Egypt lost to Cameroon in the finals.
After another disappointing outing on home soil in 2019, the Pharaohs head to Cameroon 2021, as one of the favourites.
Salah wrote (in Arabic) on Instagram: “The road is not easy, but we will fight to come back with the cup. Stay behind us #EncourageEgypt”.

One of the most over rated team , in all honesty , there is nothing special about this team
Thank you! Back in 2013, Ivory Coast had Drogba, Toure, Kalou and all their stars but Super Eagles sent them home from the tournament. Then, we played a Malian side that had Seidu Keita and wallop them 4-1. Who is this Pharaoh that we cannot drown in the Red Sea again? Go Super Eagles and do us proud.
Honestly bro, I’m finding it difficult to find any quality in that team,in this modern football.
This team reminds me of Liberia with George weah back then.
hahahahahaha exactly you are right
@Sean, abeg no wound me with laugh . Are you saying they’re like a tree in a desert, mistaking itself for a forest? That George Weah and Liberia that time dey funny. FIFA World Player of the year con become yeye and an orphan in African matches, getting frustrated and resorting to fisticuffs with opposing defenders.
I was telling someone today that – without taking anything away from Salah – Salah won’t have the complimentary skills and tactics of Mane, Jota, Firminho, Henderson etc to wreck havock at the Afcon like a lion. So it’s going to be a different ball game.
But come to think of it, they’ve won Afcon an incredible 7 times (with local players). How did that happen sef? Lol. I’d be surprised if we drew with them on Tuesday – even with all our off-field troubles.
You can’t compare this Egypt team with Salah to that of Liberia with George Weah. Even at that George Weah’s Liberia almost qualify for the the WorldCup ahead of our star studded team in 2001. If not for the victory in Sudan by the SuperEagles and Liberia’s loss at home to Ghana. Liberia had our balls in that WorldCup qualifiers until the last day. An Egyptian team with players from Alhaly and Zamalek will always be a feisty opponent to break down. And they have players from Liverpool, West ham and Arsenal to buttress their team. It will be one of the games of the tournament and anyone of the two heavyweights can carry the day. That’s the game that will determine how far both teams will go in Cameroon.
Rightly said @Ayphillydegreat..The Egyptians have two teams adjudged as some of the best in the continent. Most first team players come from this teams and Pyramids, then a few others from the English premiership so we have our work cut out.
Egypt isn’t going to be easy, has never been anyway playing against the Maghrebs. They are physically and mentally strong and play as a unit which is a factor that led to them winning it a record 3 times in a row wow!it proves football is a team game after all.
The game will be won in the midfield. With Ndidi present and healthy and the likes of Aribo playing at a very high level at the moment for Rangers with the compliments of Frank the tank,Ejuke and national team material Iwobi,we have a big team to take the game to the Egyptians with a fearless coach Eguavoen so hopefully we have an interesting and explosive game which could go down memory lane..
I’m looking at a team with a different playing philosophy as well a tweak in the playing personnel, you look forward to the first game when a new coach takes over the fans wants to see the change that comes with it the brand of football a hallmark of the coaches philosophy.
We are wishing our super eagles a victorious tournament!
AFCON: Senegal plunged into
Covid chaos just days ahead of
opener as nine players and staff
test positive for the virus.
That was the reason teams roster are expanded with additional 5 players to manage crisis situations in the course of the tournament
I don’t mean to be pessimistic but I fear for this AFCON edition in the face of omicron. This is a tournament scenario that has specific duration to hold, what happens if a team suffers an outbreak mid-competition and cannot raise 11/13 players from the expanded pool of 28 to prosecute a game? Just thinking aloud here… I believe the organizers would have factored all possible scenarios into their prep and planning sha

Tip as you like but this Afcon will be won by the team that wants it the most…….A team ready to show that they want it more than any other team……A team that is ready to attack with venom and defend as a unit…….A team that has character and ambition…….Stars alone won’t be enough to win it and talent also won’t be enough to win it……..Guts is what will win the Afcon and the team that shows it the most will go home with the Afcon.
Hi Folks,
Algeria vs Ghana friendly
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkkoJGdP6RU
This Ghana team nah soft picking o. Imagine hammered 3-0 by Algeria on the eve of Afcon. This could easily have been a WCQ 2nd round pairing. Their FA look confused, bringing back Rajevic all cos of the nostalgia of World Cup 2010. It’s just like Nigeria rehiring Westerhof cos of the memories of the 1994 golden years
The whole team looked confused…no passion…nothing….just Professional footballers running around. Algeria could have scored 5. They will get a huge backlash from their fans.
Wow, Algeria’s attack na fire! Even without Mahrez. Lots of flair and skill.
But their defense looked suspect. Ghana opened them up a few times, with surprising ease. Ghana should have scored too, if not for wastefulness in front of goal.
Ghana was harshly denied a penalty!that was genuinely a penalty at 1-1 it could have gone either way or Algeria winning with a lower margin, the call by the referee was unjust. The goals Algeria scored was as a result of goalkeeper errors i don’t think they are miles ahead of Ghana.
Meanwhile, the Algerians have mastered the art of pressing high up the pitch and inside the opposition’s half making it hard to play against them.Apparently, this has worked for them over the years with 38 games unbeating still going.
Manchester city plays same way pressing high up the pitch making sure they win back possession if Nigeria could play this way we definitely will be hard to beat against any opposition.
The Ghanaian team are not that bad. They can still improve some of the positives from this friendly. This Algerian side is such a talented bunch. Slimani, Bounedjah, Belailli, Benrahma, That Napoli guy Ounas is real Onye ball just like Chukwueze, Brahimi, Benacer. It’s a killer squad with Mahrez. They own the world record of the most matches unbeaten and still counting. Like pompei said their defense is a suspect. Can’t wait for hostilities to begin in Cameroon on Sunday!!
Every one dreams. Even the weakest team dream of winning the Afcon trophy. Egypt is also dreaming as strong team. I bleed green! Eagles will soar by God’s grace.
