It was a day to forget for newly crowned Carabao Cup winners Manchester United as they were hammered 7-0 by rivals Liverpool at Anfield in Sunday’s Premier League fixture.
A brace each from Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and a lone strike from substitute Roberto Martinez, saw the Reds end United’s unbeaten run.
Salah netted his 129th goal to surpass Robbie Fowler to become Liverpool’s all-time Premier League top scorer.
Liverpool move up to fifth place on 42 points, just three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur on the log.
For United, they remain in third spot on 49 points but have a game in hand.
After a tight early exchange Liverpool broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute after Gakpo ran on to a brilliant splitting pass from Andy Robertson, beat how marker before curling into the far corner.
Just two minutes into the second half, Nunez made it 2-0 as he rose to head home a cross from close range.
Gakpo made it 3-0 in the 50th minute as he dinked the ball past David De Gea after Salah ran rings round Martinez.
Salah got on the score sheet in the 66th minute with a right foot shot which put Liverpool 4-0 ahead.
Liverpool were not done as they poured forward for more goals and were rewarded on 75 minutes after Nunez jumped highest to head home Jordan Henderson’s cross.
Salah got his second and Liverpool’s sixth in the 83rd minute with a close range finish before Firmino added the seventh on 88 minutes.
