Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr is thrilled to win his first Africa Cup of nations medal after two failed attempts with different teams, Completesports.com reports.
Rohr guided the Super Eagles to a third place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt following Wednesday’s 1-0 win against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia.
The German previously returned home empty handed from his two previous efforts in the AFCON finals with Gabon and Niger Republic.
“It’s my first medal at the Africa Cup of Nations and I’m happy with it. I have suffered some losses to Alain Giresse (Tunisia coach) in the past, so it is good to win against him for the first time. I am happy that all 23 players played in this competition. It is good for the team’s solidarity, ” Rohr told reporters in Cairo.
The 66-year-old tactician also praises his players for their doggedness through out the competition.
“My players showed great mental strength and character in this competition. They reacted well after losing to Madagascar by beating Cameroon and South Africa, two tough oppositions,” Rohr said.
“Again, after the loss to Algeria, we showed great team spirit by coming out with a win against Tunisia. We have great commitment, we never give up.”
