Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has stated that the team will give their all to win a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title in Egypt, reports Completesports.com.
The three-time African champions who missed the last two editions of the tournament were drawn in a significantly weak group alongside Guinea, as well as the duo of Madagascar and Burundi who are set to participate in their first ever AFCON.
Hosts Egypt, Senegal and Morocco are among the favourites to win the competition but Rohr insists the Super Eagles will fight hard to win the title.
“This team has a good mixture of youthfulness and experience. The atmosphere in and around the team is very good. We are also working very hard in training,” Rohr disclosed in a video interview on the official Twitter handle of the Super Eagles.
“We gave good strikers and good defenders in the team. For now, we don’t know who our number one goalkeeper will be. We have to decide that after two weeks of preparation.
“I think our major strength is in the solidarity team. The players are willing to help each other out. We have eight new players in the team, which can help us at the end of the day.
“The experience of Obi Mikel will also help us. Everyone is happy that he is back in the team because they all want him back. I just hope we won’t have any injury problem going into the competition.
“It’s important not to put pressure on the young players, but I can assure that we will work and fight hard in Egypt. We will do everything we can to win the trophy.
“Sometimes, you need the help of God of football to achieve your objective. We want to win it for Nigerians but it important to also stay humble. We will fight till end to win the trophy. ”
After their final friendly match against Senegal in Ismailia Stadium on Sunday, the Super Eagles will depart for Alexandria, where they will play all their Group B games.
Nigeria will play Burundi on June 22 followed by fixtures against Guinea and Madagascar, on June 26 and June 30 respectively.

Great talk from coach Rohr. Please give us the best starting 11 as this will determine how progressive the team will go in the tournament.
After the big enjoyment you people had this week in Egypt and unwinding pressure off, you still don’t know who will man the post? We can now see that we don’t have what it takes to win in Egypt. I don’t hate Mr. Rohr.
I love coach Rohr too much just don’t know why but he haven’t improved his weaknesses since when he started coaching our beloved Super Eagles team. In fact, I used to be his no1 fan.
Uzoho is a future goalkeeper. He is not matured enough to be our no1 goalkeeper.
Ezenwa is the right goalkeeper for this tournament. He is bold enough to man the post but can Mr. Rohr replace Uzoho for Ezenwa? I don’t think so. He is not bold enough to do so.
This is where the comparison comes in. Let’s take a at coach Dennerby, the Super Falcons coach.
Mr. Dennerby has three good goalkeepers and he knew what to do with these goalies.
His no1 goalkeeper had a bad day in their opening match and he replaced her with his second goalkeeper and the second choice wasn’t disappointed him.
I bet you my people, if the second keeper fails to perform against France on Monday, Alaba Jonathan who she used to be the no1 goalkeeper is there to reclaimed her spot back. There is a competition in the team. That is the reason why I’m loving coach Dennerby too much.
Football is not about pressure.
Football is not about phobia.
Football is not about do or die affairs.
But football is all about entertainment, skills and enjoyment.
Nonetheless, I am not paying much attention to the Super Eagles in this year Afcon. We have players that can delivered the Afcon trophy for us but the manager is letting the team down in every competition.
He said semifinals is guaranteed but now final is not negotiable. The coach is confusing himself. But one thing is clear here, I am watching you and the NFF very closely with my korokoro eyes. God bless Nigeria!!!
What makes Ezenwa better than Akpeyi? Akpeyi would man the Super Eagles post throughout the competition in Egypt. There is no better keeper in the squad for now.
Ezenwa is not even in the top 5 goalkeepers in npfl.
@omo 9ja i agree with you ezenwa is far better. Idont know why gr keep on playing uzoho
It’s simple to know. Because Uzoho is tall and any German coach believes in the physicality of their players failing to realized that raw talents beyond that level.
Alaba Jonathan as an example is also facing the same problem. She is better than two of her colleagues but because she is short, she’s placed in no3.
On the other hands, South African female goalkeeper is short still, she’s one of the best goalies in France at the moment.
In my own opinion, Ezenwa should be given a chance to man the post at this year Afcon. For coach Rohr, it may be different. Whoever he likes should man the post but in the end, Oga Rohr is the one Nigerians is going to be blamed. God bless Nigeria!!!
Can you see that you are a big lair…?
Just last week…. I mean just last week you were eulogising Denerby for “discovering” a better goalkeeper than Alaba in Oluehi for the falcons and installing her as number one while insulting rohr for not “discovering” a goal keeper for the eagles. Now all of a sudden….in one fell swoop, youve changed mouth…it is Alaba that is now better than the two. LMAO.
Or should I paste your comments here for u to see…? Lolz
Don’t worry, we will award you a medal of honor one of these days…for hypocrisy and for your ability to tell white lies.
@Dr. Drey, you called me a liar? Really? I’m speechless. I think you are a bit sound rude. I have never said that but if you say so, can you please paste the comment you are talking about?
So I’m telling white lies abi? Continue….
Time will tell. God bless Nigeria!!!

Well done Super Falcons. I’m Super excited about coach Dennerby’s team.
The coach is stylishly rebuilding this team and replacing experienced players with the young ones. This is a good result. This is a great sign for Nigerians. Keep it up coach.
However, Coach Dennerby also making his substitutions at the right time.
With God and luck, this team will rule the world. I’m having a feeling that our female’s team is going to world cup to do something spectacular.
Coach Dennerby have learned his lessons and kept improving since France match.
A big lesson for coach Rohr here. Nobody is perfect no doubt but he should look back and fixed his mistakes. Rather, he continues with the same mistakes.
For instance, coach Dennerby systematically changed the first choice goalkeeper of the team.
Alaba Jonathan used to be the first choice of the team, coach Dennerby have not been satisfied yet. The coach went straight ahead to changed his goalkeeper.
For coach Rohr, he continues with the likes of Uzoho, Ezenwa and Akpeyi wich the result would be out soon.
All in all, I will like to say thank you so much coach Dennerby for a great job.
I’m not wishing coach Rohr a bad luck in Egypt but let’s call a spade a spade, I’m not satisfied with his decision and his tactics with the Super Eagles team. But what do I know? God bless Nigeria!!!

You will say so much and end with ‘What do I know?’ quite hypocritical. You will make negative remarks yet end with ‘God bless naija’ who is fooling who? Honestly, you are just a joke
“With God and luck, this team will rule the world”.
So you even know that God and Luck always plays a factor in the success of a team….yet your hatred for Rohr has made you to never wish the team best of luck or factor God in their possible success in the AFCON.
For your dennerby,
God and luck is a success factor… for rohr.. it is not… hypocrisy at its peak. All through the qualifiers you prayed for the team to fail so that you and your cohorts can celebrate. You even called for the sack of Rohr after qualifying with a game to spare (how stupid..! Who in his right senses sacks a coach who has just qualified you with a game to spare, for a tournament you’ve missed back to back).
Yet you come here to say you love rohr very much. Keep fooling yourself….keep telling yourself blantant lies. You love a man very much but keep calling for his sack even when he is getting results.. U love a man so much but you keep wishing him and his team failure so that you can rejoice and feel like the man who saw tomorrow.
According to you…anything but afcon trophy is a failure….but no good luck or God-be-with-you wishes for the team except prophesies of doom and failure.
Don’t worry…. You will be heavily disgraced this summer. Watch this space.
All I want is the trophy. Simful. Whoever he choses to play or to mount the post is not my problem.
please GR ezenwa should start oooh. forget uzoho abeg if you want to win first game and go far in this afcon
Rohr you have spoken well am sure down there in your heart you know your starting 11. You have chosen your words well and only mature minds will understand. Whatever you say those in their blood to criticise you will pick holes even when you are silent they will say you lack confidence. Go ahead we are with you only a significant few are praying for your failure.
Insignificant few
Omo9ja you will never change, always complaining. Anyway, i agree with you that Ezenwa should be our number one keeper. And I think the coaches are thinking along that line too, just that Ezenwa is currently nursing a minor injury.
I never changed because they never gave us what we deserved. Nigeria deserves the best. A week before the tournament, we still don’t know our team.
It is too early to know or to predict our first 11 ba? Let’s keep deceiving ourselves.
But sorry, I won’t be deceived this time around, because I have learnt my lessons since last year world cup in Russia. God bless Nigeria!!!
So u want the coach to tell u everything about his team. GR is very careful with his words, he is not an empty versel that makes so much noise. Respect bro
So u want the coach to tell u everything about his team. GR is very careful with his words, he is not an empty versel that makes so much noise. Respect bro
I have this feeling that Uzoho might b benched. His inactivity in his club last season could be a contributory factor all things being equal. If he were to be our number one at the mundial, I believe Mr rohr would’ve started him against Zimbabwe. I think, it’s time for ezenwa to be given the nod, he deserves it and has paid his dues.
i concur
With all due respect, @Omo9ja seems to be so daft! He talks like he just finished drinking 10 bottles of Star then pops on CSN to say trash.
Do you think Coach GR is a fool?? All the certificates and intellects he has gathered as a football coach, Do you think they are all fluke? How many Coach heading to this AFCON have you heard them come to Social media to ANNOUNCE their Starting 11 now?? Please answer! The Coach knows what he’s doing. Leave him to do his job. Who knows if he also has it in mind to start Ezenwa after his impressive game against Egypt and good season with Katsina Utd? Then when the match against Burundi comes and Rohr starts Ezenwa in goal, @Omo9ja will now come here to start bragging like he was the one that adviced ROHR to start Ezenwa!
You’ve been looking for a Coach that will keep on boasting and making noise that he will win AFCON at all cost all this days and this article here has just satisfied your crazy thirst. Can’t you take a chill-pill…Annoying Vessel
I agree with u Omo9ja on the goalkeeping area, I think Uzoho will be bench cause of his inactivity at his club last season as stated by Oakfield. So Mr Rohr can’t reveal his starting XI that is his weapon on opponent cause the coach is not senseless, baba.
“It’s important not to put pressure on the young players, but I can assure that we will work and fight hard in Egypt. We will do everything we can to win the trophy.
I think this statement is pleasing enough cause u always hint that the coach can’t boast of winning d trophy@Omo9ja with this statement you should know that the Coach is serious and Knows what he’s doing.
I know as a fan and national team lover u are worried about our team but yr worries is leading you to something else cause yr farfetched yr statement. it either you(@Omo9ja) accept the coach and see what he gat to offer for this Afcon than saying jargons. respect you Baba, pls show u yr seniority and knowledge of football through yr statement.
(sorry if using baba pissed you off). Ire o….
na waiting omo 9ja dey like b dis
na only u(omo 9ja) b d 1% way dey xpect d Cup at all costs, 99%, if we Win, Up Nigeria. if d other way round, Up Nigeria.
am afraid, make another tin no go happen to dis baba (omo 9ja) if SE no Win dat Cup ooooo.
I no fit just understand baba Pro.
I think this year’s Afcon is going to be war!
As it has been expanded to include more teams coupled with the tournament being moved to the summer, whoever wins this year’s tournament will go down in the history books.
Fans of the other participating countries are eagerly as passionate as we are and it appears the various FAs are leaving no stones unturned to prepare their countries for the continental showdown.
The general consensus is that Rohr must do well. It appears that he has been given free hand to select his own team and is being assisted by the FA to prepare this team well.
My only worry is that Rohr does not allow himself and his team to be put under the sort of pressure that could potentially derail his plans.
Speaking in an online media platform, Victor Baribote (former vice president of the NFF) was quoted as saying :” As a Nigerian, I wish the players in the squad the best of luck to lift the Cup.
The list is okay based on the coach’s assessment; so, what we are expecting now is good result, not excuses.” End of quote.
And that is the key: no more excuses.
Nigerians will not stand for excuses this time around under any circumstances and I think this has led to Rohr to dump his usual caution statements in favour of tough talking.
“We have a lot of strikers which means we want to score more goals and play offensive football, we also have good defenders,” Rohr told one media outlet.
Hinting a little bit on the pressure, the German tactician said in the article above :” It’s important not to put pressure on the young players, but I can assure that we will work and fight hard in Egypt. We will do everything we can to win the trophy.” End of quote.
I think it is wise not to over-expect in Egypt. Reaching the quarter final is good, a semi-finals is better and going all the way to the final and lifting the trophy is the best.
Obviously I want the best, but anything other than reaching the last 8 (quarter finals) to me will be abject failure.
Support, well wishes, solidarity, encouragement: all these are good. But to put undue pressure on the coach and the team to win the trophy at all cost could be counter productive in my humble opinion.
We will have an idea in today’s match the keeper that will likely start our 1st match at afcon. I don’t see uzoho being our 1st choice in afcon. The battle is between Agbeyi and ezenwa. I give it to ezenwa. We will play to win in Egypt but if anything goes wrong life will continue. Messi is one of the best in the world if not the best but he has continually failed with Argentina. They lost again to Columbia who hasn’t beaten them before. Many argentines and his supporters are disappointed but I have not read yet any has committed suicide. As we approach the kick off this week Friday. I want all my friends here including omo9ja to understand that this is football a game of 11 players each, sometimes you win sometimes you loose. We equally have teams with good players if not better than ours. Senegal. Egypt, morrocco, Cameroon and even ivory coast are all good and can win too. What we need is solid performance and a hunger to win. I remember last world cup that Brazil were eliminated by the dutch they played to win but unfortunately they lost to a better team that day, it can happen to any team. One thing am sure of we will not play hypertensive football in Egypt. We may get to the semis and from there anything can happen. Once again we should free our mind and enjoy the tournament but if the team perform poorly the coach should be shown the exit door. Enjoy your Sunday friends.
On who should be number one goalkeeper, I constructed a home-made stats comparison table, bench-marking this against the data of a high calibre goalkeeper (David Da Gea) to help me arrive at who the best candidate should be:
– Club Stats across competitions for 2018/19 season:
App—- GC —- CS—– GR
Uzoho– 11—– 12—– 5—— 109%
Ezenwa- 10—– 10—– 2—— 100%
Akpeyi- 26—– 30—– 6—— 115%
De Gea- 47—– 63—– 10—– 134%
**App-Appearances; GC-Goals Scored; CS-Cleansheet; GR-Goals ratio.
Clean sheet potential
Uzoho 1 in 2 matches
Ezenwa 1 in 5 matches
Akpeyi 1 in 4 matches
De Gea 1 in 5 matches
Below are some of my observations:
– I came to realise that Akpeyi has played more matches which can only lead one to conclude that he is the most fit among the 3. Ezenwa has battled fitness issues while Uzoho has been dogged by off (and on)-field distractions.
– All three goalkeepers have conceded equal or more goals per game played. Even a high calibre goalkeeper conceded 134% more goals than games played so all our goalkeepers are in good company!
– Cleansheets: Uzoho’s cleansheet stats look impressive but he has played the least amount of games. Akpeyi’s cleansheet stats appear better than Ezenwa even though he has been more active (and plays in a better organized league) than Ezenwa. Ezenwa only kept cleansheets against Kwara United and Lobi Stars (both in March) in the 10 games he managed to feature for Katsina United.
I think the number one slot is Akpeyi’s to lose. He has shown the tendency to lose his starting position when he had the opportunity. He has another one here, hope he doesn’t blow it!

SoarUp Eagles
I’m just laughing as am reading your comments my people. Some of us here do not even worry if Super Eagles reach second round of the competition.
Many of us have been brainwashed. Many of us have no idea how much Nigerians loved football.
“What we need is solid performance and a hunger to win”.
This is not enough for our standard my friend.
We are expecting more than this from our darling team.
What do you expect from a team that failed to performed in Russia in Egypt?
No1, to set a target of reaching the final of this year Afcon.
No2, to redeem their image
No3, making us believe that their back and better.
We are not Cameroonians
We are not Burundians
We are Sudanese
But we are Nigerians.
Many of us are getting scared. But why? Because they don’t believe in their team.
What is the purpose of going to a competition?
To win it right?
Like I said yesterday, football is all about entertainments, skills and enjoyments.
You guys can see now that I am having fun with our Super Falcons.
You can see that they are trying their best to achieve something meaningful in this year world cup in France. If they don’t go far in the tournament at least, they have tried.
I have no pressure on me watching them. I know say any day any time, Super Falcons are ready to deliver.
I am not really concerned about the goalkeeping department anymore. I have been warning Mr. Rohr on this issue but its seems like I’m putting pressure on him. That is how his fans seeing it.
I am trying my best for you people so that Nigeria can having a meaningful outing in Egypt but many of my colleagues here do not appreciate my efforts.
What coach Rohr couldn’t given to us in Russia, he would give it to us in Egypt and we should believe in him because we have no choice abi?
Nigerians, Egypt believes they are winning this year Afcon.
Senegal, Cameroon, Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria also having the same thoughts but for Nigeria, many of us just wanted Super Eagles to just represent their Country. For me, I omo9ja, I don’t celebrate failure.
What are they getting paid for?
It is their responsibility to satisfy Nigerians.
Anything less than good performance in Egypt is a failure and I am tired of their excuses. Enough of that excuses.
All we want is good football and winning mentality. God bless Nigeria!!!
Hmmmm what do you understand by solid performance and hunger to win? Going out in first round? The problem you have is that you read but you always have in mind to attack any write up against your wish you miss the main gist. What I saw in your write up is hypocrisy. You mean super falcon is a fantastic team? You watch with a relax mind? Well I wish them well but to be honest you are economical with the truth. Super Eagles is a solid team and will surprise you and your likes in afcon. Once again what we need is a solid performance and a hunger to win and maybe just maybe we will win the cup.
What’s the difference between good performance you used and solid performance I used. Funny you twisting things at the end we are saying the same thing
Solidarity team and 7 new young players team of oga rohr. Hmmm na wa.
Zero confidence on this coach. Rohr has a loser mentality. Like technically preparing for failure with ahead of time excuses. My young team. I think we can get out of our group. One game at a time. We are playing friendly match with Senegal the best Africa team. Burundi have players in England and Europe and south Africa that means they will be dangerous opponent. My people, that isn’t the mentality or words of a serial winner! Rohr wants Nigeria to be very happy be at world cup. A world cup team, that says alot. Jesus Nigeria is a serial winning football team.amaju pinnick should tell him. Nations cup runner up or semi final is considered a big failure that is Nigeria for you a serial multiple winners. How many trophies has rohr won in his whole career as manager? Zero! Wholeever knows rohr must tell him to oozed
A winner mentality with his words and brave approach to win match against all odds. Study amunike interviews with small tanzanian team and check the difference. Amaju must be queried and questioned if Nigeria fail to win this afcon whilst playing scintillating football. We go dey observe things! Too many future explanations of failure even before the ball is kicked.
From My Observations I find that @Omo9ja I always Like your comments because you are from the old school Nigeria mentality when it comes to ball that Naija is the best in Africa lately I feel that due to poor team selections by indigenous coaches bribery from agents over the years and, lately Poor tactical in game selections and substitutions by Gernot rohr at the recently concluded World Cup we have been as Nigerians robbed of that feeling of being a proud Footballing nation rather we have become a cautious one. Otherwise how can you explain a coach talking of his team as a group of average players with no stars??? and then calling Egypt favourite because they have Salah..
Okay does Nigeria not Have Wilfred Ndidi the best Tackler and Defensive Midfielder in the premier league (2 seasons in a row) by a mile (Is that not a Star Defensive Midfielder???) or Samuel Chukwueze the best African player under 21 in Europe and World Football now currently valued at 63 million Euros (is he not a Star in the making) or Henry Onyekuru carries the Champions of Turkey on his back and is being courted by some of the top clubs in Europe now i.e Bayern Munich to name one (is he not a star), What of Alex Iwobi an in form Arsenal star scored a thunder bolt in the Europa finals is he not a star in Africa. where as Egypt only have Salah but in Rohrs books they are bigger favourites than us RUBBISH!!!!. The coach is talking and at the same time making our players doubt thier abilities and level of play if i remember clearly this is the same tactics he used in the world cup and it backfired because when they met Croatia with modric they were standing and almost asking for Autograph lolz. were as Ndidi was playing second round round of 16 champions league against Griezmann just a few months earlier.
I mean, upon all the players i mentioned in my write up we still have Mikel Obi a former Champions League winner with Chelsea. and, not to mention our defenders as well as, Ahmed Musa a lethal attacker on his days.. If you ask me By African Standards does Nigeria not posses one of the best teams in this tournament?.
My people I ask you??.. .
Abeg! this tactic of this Coach Rohr making the players feel that the other teams I.e. Senegal and Egypt etc are better than them will back fire if time is not taking, or maybe it is just the coaches fear because he believes that those teams he mentions continuously as favourites are, coached by coaches better than him, because on paper in my view our team is stronger than at least 23 of the 24 teams in that tournament…. Thank you
@Ugo Iwunze, Well spoken my man. That is exactly what is going on now. Coach Rohr doesn’t believed in his ability.
What do we expecting from a coach who have Akpeyi in his team and making Uzoho his no1? Absolutely nothing.
Saying this will make Oga Rohr fans angry with me but it is what it is. I have to face the truth because I love my Country more than Oga Rohr and any Nigerian coach. We can’t keep deceiving ourselves.
This coach have more than enough time to build a sound and indomitable team for Nigeria but like I always said, you can give what you don’t have. I’m stopping here because the truth is bitter. God bless Nigeria!!!
nigeria lost to senegal
Abeg where can i watch the live streaming?
@Ugo Iwunze you have said it all for me . Thanks. What an Unfortunate personality of a Coach we have here ?
But it’s not his fault because when a man filled with evil and vengeance spirit is charge of Piloting Nigeria football that is what you get at the end of the day . Amaju Pinnick is reaping what he showed against Big Boss Keshi leading to his untimely death.A Coach that sacrifice himself for this country with laudable achievements go show for it but was hunted by Amaju Pinnick and his rented Sports journalist crew till The Big Boss drop death to enable them to bring in their White Messiah. How market today? Upon parading energetic young players playing regularly in Europe at top level with Champions league Experience still The White Messiah can’t even qualify the Team to round of 16 in Russia as f that is not enough here again he has just started laying another foundation for failure in Egypt without kicking the ball yet meanwhile he just lost l nil to Senegal in his Final preparation match before meeting the Burundians in few days time to the competition. Evil will always seek its vengeance(Amaju Pinnick). Just watching.
My brothers @Kd10 and @Omo9ja if we speak the bandwagons of Coah Rohr’s supporters i.e @deo and co will try to over power our voice but we are watching and we will keep on speaking for what is wrong is wrong and what is right will always remain remain Right for the truth surely always prevails. I don talk my own finish. we keep looking on
