Former Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr insists the team could have won the Africa Cup of Nations title in Cameroon under his tutelage, reports Completesports.com.
Rohr was sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation on Sunday ending his over five stay in charge of the three-time African champions.
The 68-year-old helped the Super Eagles secure a place in Cameroon 2021 and a playoff spot in the qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The former Gabon coach is confident he would have won the coming AFCON in Cameroon, having finished third in Egypt in 2019, had he been allowed to stay in charge.
“Of course! Last time we made third. We had a good AFCON, we lost in the semifinal in the last second,”Rohr said in an interview with ESPN.
“This time, I’m sure it would have been better because the team has been growing together for five years and we had our different strategies, and the tactics were becoming more and more efficient.
“And I think even without me, they will do it, they can do it, because this team is young, is intelligent, and they can fight. They love their fatherland and they will be able to do very well at the next AFCON.”

They should just have left Rohr to finish the job because he was confident of winning the tournament in Cameroon. We move. Eguavoen will win it.
Good luck to Coach Egu, we really have to leave the past behind. Thank you Gernot Rohr. When is Egu calling for camping?
Hahahaha… Mr. Young Team has suddenly found courage to say he would have won cup? Otondo coach…
Hahahahahaha my brother @JimmyBall, GrandPa Rohr has found his Voice sha.
He should better Subscribe his TV o.hahahahaha
My brother you said it all , the old man have found his voice , this is the man that refused to accept that his team is old enough to win trophies, rather he preferred calling them young team!!…he never instilled confidence to his team , that is why CAR came here and beat us !!..well I wish him all the best , he did his best but his best is not good enough to win trophies!!!
Real OTONDP my nro. Imagine the clueless coach who cammot beat CP, CAR and SL talking about winning AFCON. Izit with Moses Simon and Collins as Wing backs and Ighalo leading his line?
Make he go win am with Sudan. Then don sack dem coach too.
Iranu abasha
Before I sign out, I just remember one confused joler who claimed am another of your aliases or clones
Lol
This guy is a joker. Where are the tactics and strategies?
The coach that was struggling and don’t know how to tackle Centre Africa Republic want to win afcon with the likes of Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco, South Africa, even Cameroon to compet.
How I wish Rohr is the one to take Nigeria to afcon. This would have been the best way.
The NFF decision was too late. NFF should have used this coming afcon to expose the guy.
Yes they should’ve use the AFCON to expose him Lmao!! The coach was struggling but he qualified the team for the AFCON and WorldCup playoffs?? Anyway we move and we hope Eguavoen will be given the freedom to select his team. Our aim is to go to Cameroon and win the cup. All this noise about us going there to experiment is just a distraction for the team. The boys are professionals and are ready to fight for their fatherland. #VICTORY IN YAOUNDÉ#
The boys are very talented. They can beat any team in the World convincingly. No be Naija team spirit??? We day here. Lol
@Ayipy, Hope you still recalled the milky mouse teams in our groups for both afcon and world cup qualifier.
Don’t forget that we had Mickey Mouse teams in our qualifying groups in 2015 and 2017 and they missed out. At least now we’ve qualified for the next round and the AFCON. Now let’s go there and win it. We have a team on ground Eguavoen doesn’t have to build a new team. The players are already there just select the most inform and boom entertainment football is here.
Bro, Rohr qualified for both WC play offs and Afcon competing against what teams exactly if I may ask?
Benin?
SL?
CV?
CAR?
LIBERIA?
Haba….those PLAYERS even with no coach at all should qualify against such inferior oppositions.
But we all saw ROHR strughle against them.
Juxtapose our opponents with those GHANA, CAM, EGYOT, CIV, SENEGAL, ALGERIA, TUNISIA etc faced
The only time Rohr played any football was pre 2018 and those friendlies with Brazil and Ukraine. After that, he began to regress badly.
Just show me one game after those period and games where ROHR won or played convincingly sir
You guys should stop all these ‘we could not qualify for AFCON before Rohr came.’ The period you guys always refer to was when the team was regrouping due to the retirement of a lot of regulars, it happens to every team especially the ones with olodo coaches and FA’s who usually wait too long to replace old legs in their team. I remember how the Ugadan National team came to the National stadium to beat the Green Eagles then went to Benin City to loose to Bendel insurance and the whole country stood up in arms , the sports ministry lunched an investigation into what went wrong in the Green Eagles that made them to loose to a team beaten by a local clubside. It was because the likes of Mthematical Odegbami,Adokieye, Sam Ojebode, Emma Okpala , Christian Chukwu etc had just quit the team. Besides, in 1994 France were eliminated from the World cup qualifiers by Bulgaria in Paris and the Whole World was shocked at the result , it happened because france had just experienced massive retirement of their regulars but they went on to win the next World cup at home in 1998. The Super Eagles was in transition when those results happened, Rohr was lucky to have come in when a lot had been done to regroup the boys he inherited, not that he is better than any Nigerian coach in the mold of SIASIA, EGU the late Amodu and Stephen Keshi. The super Eagles have never lost so many matches especially to smaller teams under any other coach as they did under the wobbling and fumbling Rohr. Besides he was very very corrupt, how can any coach shun AWONIYI,DRESSER, SADIQ,DENNIS,PETER OLAYINKA in a team that have not been playing any convincing football for years if not egunje. G. Rohr’s employment was a big mistake on the part of NFF and they shoul apologise to the Whole Country .
this coach is stupid and very old,i did actually support him to carry on but when he come out with this he is very deluded,he was strugling wit kind of central republic etc while like algeria and senegal etc are demolishing any team they face .DREAM ON OLD MAN!!!
Am sure Rohr hasn’t slept since Sunday. Don’t worry Germany or France will appoint you. your tactical prowess is never in doubt Lol.
ROHR YOU A JOKER FOR SAYING THIS . THIS MAN IS NOT INTELLIGENT TO THINK HE CAN PLAY UPON NIGERIANS INTELLIGENT. HE WANTS WE NIGERIA TO OUT PRESSURE ON THE NEW COACH TO WIN THE AFCON WHAT HE COULD NOT DO IN FIVE YEARS. WHENEVER HE WAS ASKED QUESTIONS ABIUT THE CHANCES OF EAGLES HE WOULD QUICKLY REMIND US THE TEAM IS YOUNG NOW THAT HE IS NOT THERE HE IS SAYING HE COULD HAVE WON. ROHR GOD WILL PUNISH YOU FOR SAYING THAT YOU THIS OLD FOR NOTHING MAN TRYING TO DESTABILIZE THE NEW COACH. USELESS TALK HIW COULD YOU HAVE WON ANYTHING WITH THE WAY YOUR TEAM WAS PLAYING AND YOUR NEGLIGENCE OF SOME PLAYERS.
Story for the gods, with ur system of benching good players and starting bad and tired legs who are now interested in being the most capped players.they say u don’t value what u have until u loose it,u became corrupt and toyed with a team that gave u recognition.go and coach Lesotho and co let’s see ur win ratio.we will start seeing something like LLLLLDLLLDL. …just like every other country u have coached.thats his normal record
You not nice at all, let me see how you gonna make heaven, habba where is WWW?
Mr Young Team has finally changed his words after sack letter. This man is a real artist who thought his criminal works will never be exposed. Continue deceiving yourself, Pinnick is the next to be exposed and shown the door.
Lori ‘ro.
Folks, let’s discuss my first 11.
Keeper….. Adeleye
Defence….. Ekong, Balogun, collins, Aina and Awanziem
Mid Field…. V. Moses, Amaooo, Iwobi
Strikers……. Odion, Osimhen
Bench. .. Ahmed Musa, S. Moses, Ejuke, Chukwueze, Ndidi, Desser, Dennis, Omerua, Ebuehi.
@Dele Esene;
Why not Uzoho in goal? For me, I will go for Ndidi instead of Amaooo. Remember, this is nation’s cup where experience do count alot or you lose at group stage.
Very balance team. If this set don’t give us goals in afcon, then Egu has problems.
Where is Ndidi here, on the bench? Are you for real? Aribo, Akpoguma, Bassey, Onyeka.
@Dr Banks: Pls go back and watch SE matches that featured Onyeka, that guy is a waste of space, he’s always running around the pitch aimlessly. Go watch. For Aribo and Basset, I will advise the Super Eagles Coach to consider them for bench.
Correction is Bassey
Na wah ooo, I first wanna ask if you forget we gat midfield general ndidi nii, but I now see that you put him on the bench, if you be coach walahi Na after first match we go pursue you, which kind line up be this ke?
The mogambo is more clueless than Rohr. Lol
Imagine no defensive midfielder and he starts Ighalo and Collins ahead of inform and top Euro league playing players
Any first SE 11 without ;
Dennis/Chukwueze on right; LUKMAN/Ejike on left
Osimhen/Awoniyi top striker
Ndidi and Aribo double pivot
Iwobi/Amoo attacking Midfield
Aina, Sanusi, Balogun, Ekong/Akpoguma back four
And Okoye/Uzoho first choice
= failure line up
From all I have been reading, I have been totally disappointed with Rohr to say the least. He was just so foolish to trust his bench, made up of some very corrupt and self serving individuals. Rohr himself might have been totally innocent but foolish to let those selfish bench destroy his intended good work. All the advice they were giving Rohr was only to protect their players who were most possibly dropping egunje into their pockets. NOW CEREZO MUST TAKE NOTE AS FEW OF THEM ARE STILL WITH HIM. BEST FOR ROHR TO JUST AVOID D MEDIA GOING FORWARD N LEARN FROM THIS WHOLE EPISODE HOPEFULLY GOING INTO NEXT JOB.
Coach Rohr should just move on. He was not speaking this boldly during his tenure, it was always ” I have a young team” or ” there are better teams than us ” or ” we don’t have world class players”. NOW that he is out of the hot seat, all of a sudden, we would have WON and ” tactics was becoming more efficient “. The same efficient tactics that saw us labour to beat Liberia, lose to CAR at home and almost crashed out of the fifa world cup qualifiers. The efficient tactics that saw him over look deserving players. He has done what he can, we thank him for his services but it is time to move on.
Aba, it was the problem of the field, Teslim is not a good field. Put those lads in MKO Abiola Stadium or Uyo, you will see match.
@Dele Esene, your 1st 11 is ok but Okoye is 1st goalie or is it because he was figetting during our last match? Let me say it, Teslim Balogun is not a football field to test any good goalie, even the players could not pafoam.
@Chike, was the pitch bad at Austria too when they played Cameroon? I like Okoye and think he has a great future but let us not make sentimental excuses for him. That was how some people will say the reason why we struggled at the teslim balogun stadium was because of the bad pitch but when we played on that wonderful facility at Cameroon, we still struggled . It took 2 penalties to dispatch Liberia. Others will say there are no minnows in football but how come the likes of Algeria, Morroco, Senegal beat teams with wide margins.
Don’t worry now your world class coach is around he will be beating those team silly infacct Eguavon must be winning by 4:0 plus. Sebi that is when you will know your team is good abi?.How some of you reason baffled one at times. Must a team be winning with wide margin before you know such a team is good? Even the new well celebrated Man U coach has been winning with a goal since he came the last been a penalty towards the end of the match, does that make him not good? What is wrong with the man interview infact he never shown that he is pained or upset for his sack he only express his opinion which every sane mind know is very possible to win the cup with him in charge but since it is what it is he wish the team well and still reiterated that the team is young with commitment and desire to win. Pls give this man some respect after all he is a former SE coach which non of you can rewrite.
Are you comparing Djibouti, Rwanda and Comoros Island with Cape Verde, CAR or Liberia? Cape Verde has always been a tough team to beat ever since they started playing with their Portuguese players, CAR has the West African ruggedity and Liberia has the full support of their ex World player of the year as their President hence they are well motivated
That is a good list, better we test a new keeper.
It is wrong to use Teslim to rate the keeper. That stadium is bad even too small for SE. Okoye is No1 keeper in Netdaland, he is good.
So sad that we just missed the chance!
Chike is making some sense here. But why did Okoye so tensed up in those matches? Uzoho would have done better.
@Dele Esene, that’s fire brand. I like your first eleven. Now I see SE has a rich bench as well. A team without a good bench can hardly go far in any competition.
Let’s Ask ourselves one question…………Why was it that the only coach after 1980 that survived with resounding success in SE was Westerhof and how? (Never mind Bonfre as he only rode on Westerhof’s team)
The answer was simply because he found away to sideline the NFF to have a direct access to the VP Augustus Aikhomu
The NFF were always unto no good with our teams, they are only interested in their pockets and anyone that stands in their way will be given the boot
Keshi was the only other success story which was largely due to his strong personality and received enough tutelage from Westerhof himself and garnered so much coaching experience with Shaibu, Bonfre, Chuckwu, and coached 2 different teams to AFCON. But what did NFF and Picnic do to him, he was frustrated until he couldn’t qualify to defend his title in 2015. That’s how vindictive these NFF guys are, they can go to any length of sabotage to prove a point of removing a coach that doesn’t allow them to embezzle.
Rohr was simply a victim of their power play, but am glad Rohr matched them with intelligence in drafting a good contract that protected him. Their plans was for Rohr to fail to qualify for the 3rd round WC playoff by playing in animal farm stadium in Lagos where we only won 1, drew 1 and lost 1 but same team won all it’s away matches (this was a feat that never happened before)
Let’s all rally round to reject NFF and Pinnick’s corruption and high-handedness in the administration of our soccer
Rohr never spoke with such confidence when he was the coach of the Super Eagles. He never made this glowing remarks during his stint. I just dey here dey laugh
Dumbo Roar, Stop roaring!!you have been all over the air waves since picnic fired you.
Give us a break and go get a job whete you belong i.e Sri-Lanka, Thailand..
You can only fool your blind supporters with all these old tricks.
We will never know if Nigeria could have won AFCON under Rohr. His sacking was hurried, ill-timed,insensitive and tactless
But wait o. We never see provisional team list sef. At least 2 countries for our group don release their team list. Meanwhile, Eguavoen day form motivational speaker for CSN. “We can win AFCON with only 2 weeks to the tournament”. Na wa oh. By the way I saw somewhere they want to invite Abdullahi Salusu of Royal Antwerp in Belgium. I have seen that guy’s footage and not impressed with him at all. He has aggression as a defensive midfielder o. But his passes are weak and most times does not do much. Also from his style, he can easily pick up red cards. Anyway he is learning.
Abdulahi Sanusi@ antwerp?? Do you mean Alhassan Yusuf?
Sorry, it’s Alhassan Yusuf. The dude na calamity waiting to happen
All the Tom Tom boys must play AFCON. Super Eagle here I come.
Rhor was drinking so much beer,so he was dreaming he will lift Afcon. Cup in Cameroon; where is your plan your pattern of playing ;where is your quality players you recalled;you will be a disaster for Nigeria football, if you encounter Algeria or Morocco,Senengal how you can do or make?;your sacking is a mercy for Nigerian football.
No mind am, he turned his qualifying matches into experiment
I knew this man has plans, but him toying with the emotions of millions of Nigerians was his mistake. Even if he was trying out strategies, he would have made sure he won all FWC Qualifying match by at least a goal each to make sure he won’t be stripped of his chance of accomplishing his plan at AFCON. Meanwhile, thank you Mr. Rohr, we were giants of Africa before you took charge and we remain giants of Africa
