New signing Jay Rodriguez scored twice and Chris Wood bagged a hat-trick as Burnley beat Accrington 8-0 in a training ground friendly. Burnley staged two friendlies simultaneously on Tuesday afternoon at Gawthorpe, hammering Stanley 8-0 in one but losing 3-2 in the other against Tranmere Rovers.
Outfield players played in both games with many first-team squad players seeing 90 minutes of action in total as they swapped matches at half-time. Rodriguez scored twice against Accrington and Wood claimed a first-half hat-trick on top of a Dwight McNeil goal before defenders Jimmy Dunne and Eric Pieters completed the scoring with goals seven and eight in the second half.
Matej Vydra scored both of the goals against Tranmere to put the Clarets 2-0 up before Rovers stormed back to win 3-2 in the second half. The majority of Sean Dyche’s first-team squad were involved in the games, including goalkeepers Joe Hart, Tom Heaton and Nick Pope, while the likes of Ashley Westwood, Matt Lowton, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Aaron Lennon, Jack Cork, Robbie Brady and Jeff Hendrick all also featured.
