Declan Rice says England boss Gareth Southgate is “unbelievable” and hopes he’s the next young player to benefit from his leadership.
Rice is in the England squad for the first time and could feature in the Euro 2020 qualifiers coming up against Czech Republic and Montenegro.
The midfielder, who controversially switched allegiance from the Republic of Ireland after not playing a competitive game for them, says he has been impressed with Southgate after seeing him at close hand for the first time. “The gaffer is unbelievable,” he said. “He’s not scared to put in a young player and I think that’s what every young player wants to see as well. “To work with Gareth and see how he works, as this is obviously the first time, I’m really looking forward to the future.

It’s great to be here working with him.” Rice faces competition from seasoned internationals Jordan Henderson and Eric Dier for a place in Southgate’s side. He will hope his fine form for the Hammers this season will ensure he gets plenty of future chances for the Three Lions.
