Rangers manager, Philippe Clement has explained Cyriel Dessers’ bench role at the club.
Dessers has not started a game for the Light Blues since the end of November.
Clement declared the emergence of young striker Hamza Igamane has forced the Nigeria international to take up a role on the substitute bench.
“I spoke with Cyriel (Dessers) about why he’s playing less than before, and that’s because of the growth of Hamza (Igamane),” he explained.
“We will see what happens.
“Cyriel is working really hard. He’s a very good lad; he thinks collectively always.”
However, the coach claimed that Dessers has given full support to the youngster by helping him to improve his game
“He’s in support of Hamza; he gives him a lot of tips in the last couple of months in the training and during games,” he said.
“He showed that in the last game when he came in. You don’t see in him a player that’s disappointed that he’s not starting.”

Cyriel’s humility will be rewarded by his creator since his football is getting into twilight.
Dessers is the kind of player the Super Eagles must have.
When it looks like it is not possible, God always makes it possible to deliver. That is something Eric Chelle must also consider of Dessers.
Desser’s mentality is totally different from other players. He never gives up, and he always believes the impossible is nothing.
All he needs in the Super Eagles is 20 to 30 minutes of action.
Kolawole is a game-changer. He is a cool-headed player who wants other players to succeed.
Dessers is a rare striker in his own unique way. Smart, athleticism and quick thinker in front of goal.
What is reducing his potential is breakthrough. He needs our prayers.
More so, I will advise Eric Chelle not to be deceived or judge the club performance of our players but to also check the capabilities, qualities and mentality of the individual players and what they can add to the national team. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!
All this bcos he scores after how many month? You always like ur agenda to be validated and pushing a player on the new coach won’t be a good idea, let him work and pick his players by himself without the NFF and we fans dictating for him.
The Cyriel Dessers saga at Rangers feels like a case of “what have you done for me lately?” Sure, he was scoring goals earlier in the season, but the moment his shooting boots went quiet, the coach seemed to bench him faster than you can say “Ibrox.” And let’s be real—no striker, not even the greats, scores every week. Form is fleeting, and strikers need the trust of their coaches to ride out the rough patches. Unfortunately for Dessers, it looks like Clement isn’t in the mood for patience and seems to fancy that Moroccan guy as the main man.
That’s not to say Dessers is a bad player—far from it. He’s not setting the world alight, neither is he just taking up space on the pitch. He’s the kind of striker who does the dirty work, puts in the effort, and chips in with goals when things click. His link-up play, movement, and ability to hold the ball are solid, even if not spectacular. But football is cruel, especially at a club like Rangers, where fans demand results every week and coaches face enormous pressure to deliver.
The thing about Dessers is that he just needs to hang in there. Clement may have his favorites—probably sees something in Dessers’ rivals that aligns more with his tactical blueprint—but football can be funny. A couple of injuries, a suspension, or even a sudden burst of form ( I hope the hattrick will Kickstart this sudden burst) , and he could be back in the starting XI. He just needs to keep his head down, put in the work, and be ready for the opportunity when it comes.
In the grand scheme of things, Dessers is in a tough spot, but it’s not hopeless. The Scottish Premiership is unpredictable, and fortunes can change in a heartbeat. For now, our boy just needs to keep doing his thing, stay positive, and who knows—maybe his moment of redemption isn’t too far away.
Since he was benched what has been happening to rangers. How many games were they winning convincingly. Their coach is crap and i see him being fired at the end of the season
So in other words you are telling the coach not to select based on merit and current club form but sentimentality ba?
Only God can forgive you Nigerians who speak out from the two different corners of your mouth just because you have a skewed and irrational vested interest – interest that is not based on merit or anything but abject foolishness even to the detriment of the country and yet you are one of the first to keep accusing NFF, T-Pain, Govt etc etc etc, so now tell us how you are different from those selfish barawos – abegi leave story joor!
@DaTruth, Can you read my comment again? It seems like you misunderstood what I wrote.
I will give you a simple glance so that you can understand me well.
Young man, see, club form alone can not get the job done.
This is a crucial time when we need quality players who can use their cool wealth of experience to get the job done for Nigeria.
If you look at Boniface, it is like we are having another Jonathan Akpoborie in the Super Eagles.
No disrespect to you. I hope you know Jonathan Akpoborie during his days? If not, you might still be Young then or wasn’t burned during the time I’m talking about.
“you have a skewed and irrational vested interest – interest that is not based on merit or anything but abject foolishness even to the detriment of the country and yet you are one of the first to keep accusing NFF, T-Pain, Govt etc etc etc, so now tell us how you are different from those selfish barawos – abegi leave story joor!”
Hmmm. Now I understand you much better.
So you are T-pain, NFF and Government servant abi?
Are you now enjoying good roads, 24/7 electricity, the world’s best hospitals and other infrastructures ba?
Those you mentioned are using Nigerian money to enjoy life but you are here backing them? It is a pity that you Nigerians are the enemies of Nigerians.
See young man, you can’t compare me to these people. I am doing this because of you and other Nigerian people. I am doing what I am doing because of Nigeria.
You categorically said I am selfish, but you can’t call T-pain, NFF, EFCC and the Nigerian government selfish people, huh?
You can see now that you are the one that is selfish here, kę.
I am not selfish kę. After Oshimen, it is Dessers. Boniface has wasted chances upon chances more than any other players in the Super Eagles.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying Boniface is not good, but this is not the right time to have him in the Super Eagles because he has to build his confidence in the national team first, and we don’t have time for that.
If a striker hasn’t scored for a while, either in the club football or the national team, the player will lack confidence, and he has to boost his morale before he can get back to his fit again.
After the World Cup qualifiers, yes, Boniface may be included, but not now, in my own opinion.
We have other strikers that are doing wonderfully well kę.
No1. Dessers
No2. Arokodare and others.
Again, club form is not enough to judge a player, but there are other qualities that the new coach of the Super Eagles must consider, too.
Playing regularly and also players’ impact at the club level must be reviewed before getting an invitation to the national team. Eguavoen has mismanaged the situation and he failed woefully in the end. I hope you now understand me a little bit more, ba? If not, please, digest it once more. Hmm. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!
There’s a reason Dessers hardly get an invitation. When were Onuachu, Awaziem, Omeruo, Uzoho, Collins, etc., last invited? We all watch these games as fans, too.
How many chances does he need to get to prove himself??
The last friendly vs. Mali was probably the game that sealed his fate. Boniface is also probably exhausting his chances too.
I’m not keen on him as I am about Onuachu, even though he, too, scored against Nottingham Forest yesterday.
After all, as they say, form is temporary, but class is permanent. You should have at least 70% consistency and not be a one-game wonder and flop in 9 other games.
I mean, Dessers and Onuachu are in the same WhatsApp group. I am not keen on Onuachu either, even though he scored yesterday.
If you say this about both of the players, what would you say about Boniface @Kel? Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!
In as much Boniface hasn’t come good with the Eagles, he still has age on his side. And in my opinion, has a higher ceiling than both Dessers and Onuachu.
I think Boniface is a far better player than the previously mentioned duo. Before his injury, he was much more consistent in the club side. Besides, he hasn’t been given enough chances like Dessers, Onuachu and even Sadiq.
If coached properly, he is going to be far more effective in the Eagles. Hopefully, the new coach’s system brings out the best in him.
I think we should be giving opportunity to players like Arokodare, Akpom , Chrisantus of Getafe and maybe, (if necessary), reinvite Maja of Westbrom; he is doing well.
Anyway, it is up to the coach’s prerogative. We can only respect it.
@Dr. Drey. It’s been long since you commented on this platform or maybe I am the one that missed your comments. I hope you are good.
Chelle has sent him to his grace. The day Chelle fails he will use his real name to comment.
