Barcelona director of football Eric Abidal says he is in the dark as to why Adrien Rabiot opted not to join the Catalans this summer.
France international Rabiot was a target for the reigning Spanish champions this summer after the midfielder confirmed he would be leaving Paris Saint-Germain when his contract expired on June 30.
Barcelona were said to be leading the race for the 24-year-old’s signature and several media outlets claimed a deal would be confirmed on July 1 when he officially became a free agent.
However, it was Italian champions Juventus, who also signed Welshman Aaron Ramsey on a free from Arsenal, that managed to snap up the Saint-Maurice-born star and Abidal says he doesn’t know why Rabiot snubbed the Catalans.
“He was on our list [of targets] and it was his choice to join Juventus,” he told Le Parisien. “I do not know the reasons. It may have been a sporting choice or a financial decision, I don’t know.”
