Unseeded Belgian Elise Mertens won the Qatar Total Open on Saturday after overcoming top seed Simona Halep. The 23-year-old secured the biggest title of her short career after producing a superb display on Saturday afternoon.

Halep used her experience and power to move into a one-set lead, but Mertens rallied from a break and set down. She eventually secured a 3-6 6-4 6-3 to win her first-ever WTA Premier-level crown and the fifth title of her career overall.
Saturday’s success could be a sign of things to come for the Leuven-born star after an impressive week.
The former World No.12 beat three top-10 players on her way to winning the event, with Kiki Bertens and Angelique Kerber unable to match her quality.
