Forgotten defender Achraf Lazaar is reportedly keen to stay at Newcastle United and wants to press his first-team claims. Having joined the Magpies from Italian club Palermo in the summer of 2016, the left-back has hardly featured for the senior side, with only four Championship appearances in 2016-17 and a cup outing the following season.
The 27-year-old spent the 2017-18 campaign on loan with Serie B side Benevento and, surplus to requirements at St James’ Park, he was sent out on loan to Sheffield Wednesday for the second half of last season. That would seem to suggest he has no future with the Tynesiders under Rafael Benitez but a report in the Chronicle claims the Morocco international has been working hard on his fitness in a bid to hit the ground running in pre-season.
It remains to be seen whether that is with Newcastle as Benitez is certain to try and freshen things up if he remains in the north east beyond this summer. Wednesday were said to be impressed with Lazaar but there has been no talk of the Owls looking to make the move permanent.
