The Nigeria international was replaced by Brazil midfielder Lyanco two.minutes from time.
He has scored one goal in four league appearances for the Saints this season.
Bruno Fernandes scored the winning goal for the visitors five minutes before the hour mark.
United have now recorded back-to-back wins for the first time since February.
Southampton will host Chelsea in their next Premier League game on Tuesday.
United will travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers for their next game on September 3.
