The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Mr. Mele Kyari has identified physical and mental fitness as the bedrock of top performance by the management and staff of the Corporation.
Mr. Kyari spoke, Saturday at the closing ceremonies of the 12th edition of the NNPC Sports Fiesta, held at the Chevron Recreational Centre, Gbagada, Lagos,
The GMD, who said that physical fitness was very crucial to workers’ well-being in the quest for consistent delivery of top performance, noted that the Corporation’s interest in the general wellbeing of staff has led to massive investments in sports and general training.
“The NNPC believes more in the welfare of its staff and we cannot expect staff to deliver on their jobs except they are happy both mentally and physically.”
While commending the Human Resources Division, zonal coordinators and other members of the organizing team for a successful week of activities, Mr. Kyari rest-assured guests and participants of his continued support for the Fiesta and other staff developmental initiatives:

“We know the importance of sports activities in keeping the staff fit, hence the management will continue to support efforts like this to enable our staff to be involved in sports for fitness purposes and also have fun and network,” he said.
Mr. Kyari who singled out Lagos zone for special commendation for winning the competition was quick to add however that all participant from every zone or subsidiary of the group and other stakeholders who worked to make the Fiesta a huge success are all winners.
In her remarks, the NNPCs Group General Manager of the Human Resources Division, Mrs. Oyeyemi Ladipo, said the fiesta had lived up to expectations of providing fitness and staff bonding. She described the competition as a dress rehearsal for top performance at the forthcoming Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Games, NOGIIG.
Mrs Ladipo who said the 12th edition of the sports fiesta, tagged “Physical and Mental Fitness for Increased Productivity, created an avenue for management to have a good relationship with other staff across the country, also commended members of the organizing team for staging what she considers best edition ever.
She said that one of the unique features of the 2020 edition of the games was the insistence by management that all competitors undertook and passed a medical fitness test before they are allowed to feature in the competition.
“Although we did not ask for medical fitness certificates in past editions of our games, we decided to introduce it this year to raise the standard, underline our health and safety values and show that we care for our staff,” she said.
The 12th edition of the internal sport fiesta was won by team Lagos which attributed its success to hard work and dedication while Abuja and Kaduna came second and third respectively.
The games, an internal sports initiative from the NNPC group held from 12th -18th of January, was staged in different venues including the Chevron Recreational Club, Gbagada; Yaba College of Technology, Yaba; National Stadium, Surulere and Ikoyi Club, Ikoyi.
