Former Nigerian international, Christian Chukwu has advised the Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro to have a mixture of players in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) and foreign based players in the senior national team if he wants to achieve positive result.
Chukwu made this known in an interview on Channels Sports Sunday, where he decried Peseiro’s failure to give the home based players the chance to prove their worth.
The 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner also insisted that the Portuguese tactician should be made to live and work in Nigeria.
“Our coach should come and stay with us in Nigeria. We have a lot of talents in Nigeria, in our local league and when you don’t camp and train them and forget about this we have a match, we come on Thursday, they train on Friday, they play on Saturday and they disperse again. We don’t have a team,” Chukwu, who was nicknamed Chairman for his leadership qualities during his playing days, said.

“Let’s come back home, all those playing overseas are good players. They have the opportunities, we have those players back home who are equally good but they don’t have that opportunity to go abroad and play and if you come here and discover them, let you be their manager and then expose them to the Europe people. We have players who are very good, better than the foreign-based players but they don’t have the opportunity.
“You have to come home and discover them and train them. I am not saying they should not be mixed with the foreign-based. Invite the foreign-based but give the home-based opportunity. They are the ones you can use to get anything you want to get.
“As far as I am concerned we don’t have a national team now because even our caches stay abroad, he comes with the players to come and play and travel again. He should come and reside here, let us work together, we are ready to help him with whatever he wants to achieve,” Chukwu, who also coached the Super Eagles from 2003 to 2006 said.

These ancient ex-footballers are still discussing the primitive home-based-foreign -based subject Nigeria is about quotas and no place for excellence
*** FOR ABOUT THE INVITATION OF HOMEBASE PLAYERS, we should not be deceiving ourselves about them(homebase) because none of the homebase players are READY to GIVE STIFF COMPETITION against the foreign professionals. NFF should be inviting homebase players for CHAN COMPETITION/QUALIFIER to prove themselves. THEN ANY HOMEBASE PLAYERS CLAIMING THAT HE IS GOOD TO BE IN SUPER EAGLE setting, SHOULD PROVE HIMSELF IN CHAN COMPETITION/QUALIFIER.
*** BUT WHEN YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT THE INVITATION OF NEW FOREIGN BASE CONSISTENT PLAYERS LIKE ADEBAYO- ADELEYE, S.OSIGWE, EBUEHI, OSAYI, JORDAN-TORUNARIGHA, BRUNO-ONYEMAECHI, ONYEDIKA, ALHASSAN, GIFT–ORBAN, AKPOM, DESSERS,. BONIFACE, EJARIA, EJUKE: ANY OF THESE PLAYERS, FOR SURE , CAN RIVAL OR GIVE A STIFF COMPETITION FOR INCUMBENT PLAYERS FOR SHIRT/POSITION..
FOR INSTANCE: It is very certain that
@ ADELEYE , OSIGWE can rival IZOHO, OKOYE for super eagle number one shirt.
@ EBUEHI, OSAYI can rival AINA for no. 2 position
@ JORDAN-TORUNARIGHA, BRUNO-ONYEMAECHI can rival ZAIDU, COLLINS, BASSEY for no. 3 position
@, ONYEDIKA, ALHASSAN can rival NDIDI, ONYEKA for no. 4 position
@ GIIT ORBAN, AKPOM, DESSERS, BONIFACE can rival ONUACHU, SADIQ, IHEANACHO, AWONIYI for no. 8 and 9 position
@ EJARIA, AMAO, OLISE, EJUKE can rival ARIBO, IWOBI, SIMON FOR no 10 and 11 position AND SO ON.
WE NEED TO INVITE & GIVE CHANCES TO ALL THIS NEW PLAYERS to really know who can FIT-IN into Super eagle setting/position.
This man’s reasoning sulks, it might be his threshold for sound reasoning was way too low at 40 hence……. How they constantly fail to answer THE BEGGING QUESTION ON WHAT HAPPENS AFTER AN INVITED HOME BASED BECOMES FOREIGN AFTER ONE OR TWO GAMES with SE, ALBEIT IN SOME VERY LIGHT WEIGHT FOREIGN LEAGUES, leave me totally disappointed.
The position of Super Eagles is not about foriegn or local players it’s about football array or organization, see how Morrocco has reached semi- final in Qatar World Cup , this is cause of thier array and organzation of fottball from infarstrctures, they have excellent local leauge, excellent stadiums, excellent football administration without administerive corruption, have excellent clubs which won many CAF tournaments, so this reflects to thier national team; Ngeria football needs these things to be World class football country, so NFF must beging thier plans to do these array and organiztion.
“….if you come here and discover them, let you be their manager and then expose them to the Europe people….”
That’s it guys. That’s the reason for the clamor for inclusion of home-based players in the Super Eagles at all cost.
Its all about marketing their not even near half-baked products for pecuniary gaining.
We can raise almost an entire national team of quality players based abroad who are on the fringes or do not yet even stand a chance of making the SE yet, but their emphasis are always on their so-called very good homebased players who they will recommending to be camped for 2 weeks before the foreign based players arrive.
If your homebased players are that good, why should they be camped for 2 weeks….LMAOoo…?? they should be camped for 2 days like their foreign based counterparts lets see if they are truly as good as the foreign based players.
And just as Glory said, after 3-4 invitations and the first batch of invited homebased players move to whatever backwater leagues they move to, another batch will be invited kwanu….?? And the national team then becomes a hatchery where premature players are sold to Libyan and Tanzanian leagues…?? Please where is Anayo Iwuala today…?
The same Christian Chukwu who is calling for homebased players today almost got our 2004 AFCON qualification bungled (thank God for a late abracadabra-ish penalty the referee conjured for us to level scores with Angola in Benin to then qualify for tat AFCON ahead of Angola) using homebased players and eventually dropped them completely from our 2006 WC qualification. Apart from Vincent Enyeama, he went to 2004 AFCON with only Romanus Orjinta (former Enyimba captain) as a homebased player and wasnt even brave enough to play him throughout the tournament until the 3rd place playoff game where he game him 45 mins or thereabout.
One day, hopefully, national interests will start overriding selfish stomach-focused interests.
Thank so much @ Dr Drey for this post. I almost forgot this same Christian Chukwu was once SE coach. These are the people destroying our football. No brains, selfish, diabolic, evil etc.
Everytime I say evil here, people may not understand. But when someone is doing or promoting something that will be detrimental to the overall good of the people, such one is surely an EVIL PERSON.
This whole idea of homebased players invitations to SE lost its relevance since that moment our national teams coaches /administrators started allowing homebased players sign foreign contracts even whilst in national Camp. How can any coach raise a good national team in such circumstances?
It started with the SE and recently has become the norm with our junior teams, reason we are now struggling to perform at these levels. Our female national teams is where homebased players invitation is still maintaining some level of sanity but with nigeria and those ever hungry idiots, this sanity in the female national teams is only a matter of time.
The pattern of the invitation of homebased players into the SE already shows the intentions of their promoters.
For example, Anayo Iwuala was so good as a homebased player he was always no 1 on the list of invited players into the SE, but he stopped being good for even our standby list immediately after he signed for Esperance in Tunisia.
2 years later he’s lost in oblivion.
There are always as good as the foreign based counterparts until money changes hands and they become foreign based too
Some people self, for your mind there’s no home based players that can outplayed foreign counterpart? We have many home based players that are better than them, the problem is that they won’t select them for chan competition that’s why they keep on failing, foreign based players can’t even dribble Lesotho players , For your information any home based players can over power and dribble all this abino players in Germany and so on is just matter of opportunity, for my area we get skilful players but corrupted Nigeria won’t see them that’s the problem
Please name them…please name the home based player that can outplayed his foreign counterpart.
We are waiting…!
Abeg don’t mind that confused old fool. You have a coach who was deceiving us by attending league matches, thinking he would give our home based chance to fight for positions in the national team. It’s obviously clear they don’t have enough funds to grease his palms. He is now coaching from afar. If una like call Chukwu all kinds of names, no be minnows used mostly home based to play draw with your so called foreign based players. Some players are gasping for air on the field. Abeg make we hear word biko.
Merit and passion should always be the criteria, whether home or foreign-based. Spread your net wide. Of course, talking to the future SE coach, not the temporary occupier imposed by Pinnick under shady circumstances.
But does it even make sense? Star players jetting in today, train tomorrow and play a crucial WQC match the day after, while a minnow team with home-based players like Lesotho who have been camped for 2 weeks battles you to a score draw.
1. Quality players + No time to gel. Trains only a few hours = Sub par strength on match day.
2. Mid or low quality players + Enough time to gel. Trains together 7 days or more = Gains confidence to play the so-called star-studded team.
I’m just divided about the next Afcon. I want Nigeria to do well, but that would mean the current contractor carrying about a notepad and pen on the training field like a serious student would continue in that role, which I don’t want.
So if we get booted out, I don’t really mind. It’s not a bad sacrifice for World Cup qualification, as long as the new Afcon winner is a first or second-time winner.
God bless you for this, what happened to the days of camping home based players weeks in advance to any international game. You wait one week or even days before a game to train for 2 or 3 days to play a major game. Smh

You have to wonder what’s in it for the ex-pros to keep calling for the inclusion of home based players. No be the same players we dey see, Abi the ex-professionals de use AI glasses ni? There is something strange afoot. I no trust our jobless ex them

Hahahaha….useless long mouthed son of a pig. Abirun oku omo.
Your homebased that you camp for 2 weeks have failed to qualify for ordinary CHAN since 2018….LMAO. The last time we checked it was their Togolese, Beninoise and Nigerien counterparts who have repeatedly dumped them out of CHAN on several occasions with their 2 weeks camping…..LMAOOoo. And that is ordinary chan qualifiers o, we have not talked about AFCON qualifiers…..lmaoo…not to talk of almighty World cup qualifiers…LMAOooo.
Mexico roasted them without even leaving gear 2 the last time they went on a national assignment after yet another 2 week plus camp…..LMAOOoo
Okponu alainilari oshi
I thought your homebased are as good as their foreign counterparts….LMAOoo. Why are you then begging for 2 weeks camps for them as if your father has the money to fund their camping expenses….LMAOoo. Ode omo lasan lasan.
They should also be camping for 2 days like their foreign counterparts if they are that good and you can beat your chest that they are, lets see if they will even get anything close to a slim loss against lesotho and zimbabwe in WC qualifiers….LMAOo.
Oloriburuka eda. Won o ni jere e lae.
@ Kenneth. Please remove whatever personal grudges you have against Dr Drey and lets be honest/mature with our arguments. We are here to learn and understand things proper.
NOW why is it that the so called homebased have consistently failed to qualify/perform at the CHAN level despite being camped for weeks.
Strange you guys are making comparison with Lesotho and others homebased. These countries have their best players at home, and as such, they don’t have options besides their homebased. And also their homebased have enjoyed the benefits consistently coming together for years and not the two weeks camping you guys are suggesting.
AGAIN, PLEASE WHAT SHOULD THE COACHES DO WHEN AN HOMEBASED INVITED TODAY BECOMES FOREIGN THE NEXT TIME?
Hahahaha….leave the imbecile….LMAOooo. Idiot will even disagree there are 7 days in a week so far Dr. Drey says so.
Very good question to the fool….WHAT SHOULD THE COACHES DO WHEN A HOMEBASED INVITED TODAY BECOMES FOREIGN THE NEXT MONTH…LMAOooo.
AND WHY IS HE DEMANDING 2 WEEKS CAMPING FOR HOMEBASED WHEN EVEN THE ENTIRE FIFA WINDOW CANNOT ACCOMODATE SUCH LENGHTY CAMPS. I thought they are as good as their foreign counterparts who sometimes only have 2 training sessions before competitive matches…..LMAooo.
As if we would play draw with the likes of Lesotho if our foreign-based players also had the luxury of camping for 2 weeks too.
If those who claim our HB are as good as our FBs (including the NFF and the LMC) are sure of themselves and can beat their chest about it, our world cup qualifiers should henceforth be prosecuted with 100% homebased players camped for the same 3 days before the qualifying matches like their foreign based counterparts. What is good for the goose is also good for the gander….LMAOoo….Lets judge this matter and lay it to rest once and for all…..LMAOoo
