Japanese gymnast Shoko Miyata will not be participating at the Paris Olympic Games after he was sent home for violating the camp’s code of conduct.
The 19-year-old captain of Japan’s women’s artistic gymnastics team left the training camp in Monaco following an investigation into the incident on Friday.

In a statement issued by the Japan Gymnastics Association (JGA) Secretary General, Kenji Nishimura said that the association had been told that Miyata was seen smoking in a private setting in Tokyo sometime at the end of June or the beginning of July.
“She understands the importance of the rules, and she looked sincere in facing up to her behaviour,” he said.
“It has been tough for her, but she has talked openly and honestly about it.”
Her withdrawal is a significant setback for Japan, which is striving to secure its first artistic gymnastics team medal since the 1964 Tokyo Games.
