Former Nigerian international Dosu Joseph has urged the Super Falcons to take advantage of any goal-scoring chance against Brazil ahead of Thursday’s Paris Olympic Games women’s football event.
This will be the Super Falcons’ fourth appearance at the Olympics; no other African team has qualified for more than two editions of this tournament.
Speaking with Completesports.com, the Atlanta Olympic gold medalist stated that the Super Falcons must do their best to pick a draw or defeat Brazil in their opening game.

“We thank God there was no injury in the camp. They have played Brazil before, so both teams are not just newcomers. I believe the coach knows how to play them and the ladies know how to play Brazil.
“But most importantly, in the first game of this tournament, they need to do their best to pick a draw or to win. But then, playing against Brazil won’t be an easy game, and Brazil playing against Nigeria won’t also be easy for them either.
“All I can say is that they should take their chances once they have it. We have the team, and the players are young and ready to go. We wish them the very best of luck.”
Interestingly, this will be the third encounter between these sides and their second clash at the Olympics. Brazil defeated the Super Falcons 4-3 after extra time at the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup. This was followed by a comfortable 3-1 victory in the group stage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

On second viewing, I came to appreciate the team’s effort more than i did initially. The Brazilians were very compact and defensively astute. The choked the pitch and sought to dispossess our players of the ball.
That said, Toni Payne and Jennifer Echegini had no answer to Brazil’s pressing game. Even Kanu, Okoronkwo and Onumonu were bullied off the ball. Only Ajibade proved capable of effectively shrugging off the Brazilians. She matched them physically and tactically.
Okeke was simply unable to rise to the occasion.
So, I think Oshoala needs to return to the starting line up from the left Nicole Payne can replace the ineffective Okeke.
Toni Payne needs to resurrect her world cup as spirit. Whilst Ohale will do well to add leadership qualities to her resume
