Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has described Desire Oparanozie as a true leader following the latter announced her retirement from professional football.
On Wednesday, Oparanozie officially announced her retirement from the game, both at international and at club level, on her X handle.
“To my fans, family, and friends, thank you for the show of love and support over the years. It’s time to take a bow, as I believe there’s no better time than now. I’m officially announcing my retirement from professional football for both club and country.
“To every team and coach I have played for, to every mate I’ve played alongside, and to every opponent I have played against, thank you all for being part of this incredible journey. Thank you football, thank you Nigeria.
“Desire Ugochi Oparanozie.”

Plumptre, who recently joined Saudi Arabia Women’s league club Al-Ittihad, expressed her delight playing alongside Oparanozie.
“A true leader in all its forms,” Plumptre wrote on social media. “So grateful to have played alongside you and learnt from your courage in always representing us and those who come after us ❤️ Big love to you always

Oparanozie helped Nigeria win four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations titles in 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2018.
She was part of the Super Falcons squads that featured at the 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cups.
Also, she helped the Falconets reach the final of the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and lost 2-0 to hosts Germany.
