Super Eagles left-back Bruno Onyemaechi’s Portuguese club Boavista, has expressed its economic distress, stating it is on the verge of judicial liquidation.
In a statement on Tuesday, Boavista announced the economic situation in which it believes it finds itself.
“The Commercial Court of Vila Nova de Gaia has ordered a Special Revitalization Process (PER), which is now following legal procedures and will be developed in the coming months,”
“The truth is that, without the adoption of rigorous and exceptional measures, the only alternative will be to file for insolvency, which would lead to the inevitable liquidation of the club, thus frustrating the legitimate expectations of everyone and the recovery of credits by creditors.”
The club went on to say that the “economic and financial deterioration is undeniable”.
For months, Boavista has been surrounded by problems: unpaid salaries and bonuses, delayed or unpaid debts, and a ban on recruitment.
On 17 August 2022, Onyemaechi joined Boavista on a season-long loan with an option to buy then in June 2023, Boavista triggered the option and signed him on a permanent deal.
Founded on 1 August 1903 by British entrepreneurs and Portuguese textile workers, Boavista is one of the oldest clubs in Portugal.
With nine major domestic trophies won (one Championship, five Portuguese Cups and three domestic Super Cups) Boavista is the most decorated Portuguese football club after the “Big Three” (Benfica, Porto and Sporting CP).
Also, Boavista spent 39 consecutive seasons in the Primeira Liga (50 in total) and, together with Belenenses, is the only team outside the “Big Three” to have won the Portuguese Championship, in the 2000–01 season.

Ehn? Unpaid salaries and bonuses ke? Boavista, you too? So it’s not only NFF ONIGBESE that is guilty of this rubbish!
O ma se ooo. I hope they’re not owing Bruno. It would be incredible for his club and country to be owing him match bonuses at the same time! NFF should try and do their own part.
Pay players their bonuses, and pay coaches their salaries. This is non negotiable.
I’m waiting for Segun West to come and contest this point with me.
Olusegun West, west side is not the best side. Gba be!
