The Executive Committee of Nigeria Football Federation has approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee for the appointment of Aliyu Zubairu as head coach of the country’s U-20 side, Flying Eagles.
The appointment of Zubairu, who led El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri to win the President Federation Cup at the expense of Abia Warriors FC in Lagos in June, takes immediate effect.
He also masterminded the Maiduguri club’s promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Kiss U20 WORLD APPEARANCE BYE BYE.
BUNCH OF IDIOTS IN BFF. U17 NORTH U20 NORTH, U23 NORTH.
YET NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT
“kiss under 20 world cup bye bye’. This line made me smile. 🙂
Let’s give this man a chance.
Congratulations sir,was rooting for John Utaka, seems NFF only give thought to or look at the 94″ set for national team jobs.
However,Zubairu has good records from what i read,i wish him well..I hope the NFF give him all the support he needs..The teams camp should open early enough taking into account the fact the gaffer is new to coaching at this level, with zero experienece, delivering straight off could be a heculean tax,the need for early camping.
The truth of the matter is that most of these appointments are made with agendas in mind.
Undeserving people are in the corridors of power in Nigeria.
The proof is there for those who care to know.
U17 – Manu Garba (North)
U20 – Aliyu Zubairu (North)
U23 – Ladan Bosso (North)
SE – Bosso/Abdullahi being prepped to assist the incoming foreign coach, understudy and take over as SE coach when the foreign coach leaves.
Like Buhari, like Gusau. The northern agenda in full force. I predicted this like a month cos I could read Gusau’s body language.
The goal? To increase the quota/number of northern names in Nigerian national teams with the SE the real target, especially as Musa and Sanusi are practically out atm and only Al Hassan representing.
It’s easy to ‘justify’ their appointments as if candidates from other regions didn’t do same or better it. In the mean time, El Kanemi crashed out of CAF at the very first hurdle.
Alhassan’s invitation is criminal, not when we have one Ojediran of Lens and Chrisantus of Getafe, either of the above names seems sensible in my opinion.
Since we already have 5 regular midfielders,a young and fresh player should have made the list.
My brother, I suspect Al Hassan will always get an invite except his club declares him injured/unfit. Personally I don’t care about names of players/coaches as long as you’re good, but one can easily smell a hidden agenda of this Gusau.
Who even knows the conditions they have been handing down to prospective foreign coaches that have been making some of them reject the role. Perhaps instructions on reserved quota system for some special players to ‘balance’ the look of the SE.
That’s Christianus no be player I beg, too
Much garagara, I’ve patiently watched him with getafe and I dnt see him making it to the SE atm.
A team from Benin removed them.
Yes o. And he was promptly rewarded with an appointment.
Kel,
I heard they wanted to employ Samson Unuanel. But some of those “world exclusives” he drops on CSN discouraged them.
As if your NPFL teams have been winning CAF club competitions for 10 years back to back. Is it not the same 1st round 3 out of your 4 representatives always crash out every damn year…?!
You just read up there that he gained promotion with Elkanemi and lifted the FA the same season.
So basically he took a 2nd division team to the continent.
But all that doesn’t matter to you…that isn’t a good enough achievement to merit the U20 job…..only his ethnicity his your first concern.
How are you different from racists in Europe….??
Some of you are nothing but a shame and disappointment to the coming generations.
But Eguavoen [South], Ilechukuwu [South], Ogumodede [South], Baruwa [South] and the last person [South too] were all appointed into the SE recently and all of you regional jingoists kept mute.
Why are you all now raising dust the other national teams have coaches from the north.
Does the south have sole custody of competent coaches in Nigeria….?
The question you should be asking is if they are occupying those positions on merit and if they have the capacity to deliver…….not what part of the country they come from…?!
This sorts of mentality is really disgusting to say the least.
@Dr Drey, normally I don’t care about names, but when the administrator (Gusau) does, then we have to call him out. The names you mentioned are all on temporary appointments and for a single team. I also date to say they’re a good distraction/justification for Gusau when the new foreign coach is eventually appointed, Eguavoen returns to his TD role, and Gusau will “justifiably” upgrade Bosso as the SE assistant coach.
How do you have all the age grade teams going to a section of the country??? Are others sub par??? Gusau is the ethnic jingoist, not us calling him out for it.
Salisu was assistant to Rohr for about 7 years. He did a good job and no one really complained.
Gusau should make public the interview process for all the undergrade coaches roles. Who and who applied, were shortlisted and how he arrived at the final appointees. Not all these abracadabra sole appointments.
Dont give us the excuse of temporary appointment….if they were all northerners, you wouldn’t keep mute as you have kept mute. And I dare say that crew looks very much like the crew that will prosecute the afcon qualifiers…..so whether temporary or permanent, the SE technical crew will be an ALL SOUTHERNER AFFAIR.
And if they go on to qualify for the AFCON, do you think they will be dissolved and again reconstituted before march when the world cup qualifiers resume…???
As much as you are accusing Gusau of being a jingoist, you too are not different from him.
You have quickly made up an excuse for losing your voice having an all southerner SE technical crew [who I wish to say are there on merit too] but raise dust because a man who has just achieved promotion and FA cup title with a club like Elkanemi of maiduguri has been appointed as u20.
You even laughably refer to Rohr’s time, when Alloy Agu, Ike Shorunmun, and Tunde Aluko [or whatever was his name] were also in that crew while the team’s media officer was this Yoruba journalist from Channels and succeeded by another Yoruba journalist from Brilafm Babafemi Raji
Ilechukwu won the league – has he not been rewarded with a SE role despite struggling to defeat a comoros club…?!
Ogunmodede was league runner up – has he also not been rewarded with a national team role despite being eliminated too….?!
You never raised dust over the appointment of any of the above, but Zubairu being similarly rewarded is making you so bitter….?!
You know what that is called brother….. BIGOTRY, yea….ETHIC AND REGIONAL BIGOTRY. And it doesn’t fit you. Grow from it.
As I said before, The questions you should be asking is if these newly employed coaches occupying those positions merit their appointments and if they can deliver….not what part of the country they come from…!
The fact that you’ve not even asked those questions till now, shows where your grouse really lies.
Once again, it doesn’t fit you. Grow from it.
That account for the reason why Nigeria has not qualified for an age group competition for a while now, with all these ethnic paddy man selection according to my urhobo brothers ovo ovo this can’t clearly take us anywhere.
Last Olympic men’s football we couldn’t qualify because the team was loaded with a section of the country’s geopolitical zone.
NFF is crazy and will never cease to amaze me with their inchoate and very debilitating level of incompetence. Wafu under 20 tournament is happening NEXT MONTH and they are just appointing a coach who should move round the nation to scout for players for screening. Oh, my bad. Bosso had a “team pool” and npfl has plenty of under 20 players that can easily be whipped into a progressive team in a few weeks.
I thought coaches of our cadet teams are only paid on per match basis. What cost saving methods are these kinds of appointments? Do glasshouse feel other nations are not building capacity to take on fading giants like Nigeria? Doing the same thing over again and expecting a different result. No one is hearing anything about Manu Garba and the golden eaglets again until maybe CAF sends a memo on world cup qualifiers but that team has been idle since the Wafu confusion.
May Gusau and his team not win second term in 2026. Football is pain in Nigeria.
Falcons have no friendlies currently lined up when 5 windows exist before year ends
Rubbish
Oh right!Though i’m yet to see Chrisantus play, the fact his coach hold him in high regard because you don’t get such honour if you’re not good..This are factors that led to my admiration of the young lad..
Apparently, you don’t get to start for a mid-table la liga team if you aren’t good.
The other lad i mentioned Ojediran had a fantastic game coming on for Lens against Monaco this past week.his enterprise got Lens a much deserved“equalizer““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““`
Spot on!
Someone that could not go beyond a Benenoise side in first round is now a national coach. NFF technical committee is joke
The last Flying Eagles led by ISSA Ladan Bosso and captained by Daniel Bameyi were outstanding at the 2023 FIFA U20:World Cup in Argentina . Now Aliyu Zubairu faces a race against time to put together a team that must qualify for the 2025:U20 AFCON and the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile
Happily ,there are many youngsters from the NPFL and football academies in Nigeria who just joined foreign clubs to gain more experience and further pursue their football careers overseas. Nigeria is currently brimming with soccer talents and must surpass the exploits of Senegal who took both U17 ,U20,U23 and AFCON titles in one fell swoop. Aliyu Zubairu should be wary of football agents and overbearing NFF officials who may try to impose players on him . Selection into the new Flying Eagles team must be strictly based on merit. Congratulations to Coach Aliyu Zubairu.
