According to reports, Eddie Newton will become part of Frank Lampard’s coaching team at Chelsea when his appointment is confirmed. Former Chelsea midfielder Lampard is expected to be named as Maurizio Sarri’s successor imminently and the new man in charge has some coaching spots to fill after 11 people followed the Italian out of Stamford Bridge.
Jody Morris, another ex-Blues player, is expected to be number two at the Premier League outfit next season, while numerous other members of staff from Derby County look set to make the move to west London. It is now being claimed one of Lampard’s stipulations to take the vacant managerial position was for Newton, who currently acts as loan player technical coach for Chelsea, to change roles and join the coaching set-up.
Adding further strength to the rumours of a change for Newton, Claude Makelele is said to be returning to Chelsea to work with the loan players in some capacity. The Blues have been set on bringing back former players to the club this summer, with ex-goalkeeper Petr Cech returning as a technical and performance advisor.
