Newcastle have put a ‘not for sale’ notice up over Sean Longstaff after it was reported that Manchester United were looking at him. The Sky Sports report did not go as far as to suggest the Old Trafford club were readying a bid for the 21-year-old midfielder but he does fit the profile of player that current Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is believed to be targeting.
The Magpies are in a strong position, with Longstaff having signed a new four-year deal with the club only last December – midway through his breakout season where he quickly established himself as a firm fixture in Rafa Benitez’s line-up until injury curtailed his campaign.
Longstaff’s performances earned comparisons to former Manchester United and England midfielder Michael Carrick, who is a key figure on Solskjaer’s coaching staff. Reports on Tyneside indicate Newcastle are not willing to sell the midfielder, who they see as a big part of the club’s future.
