Andy Murray and Feliciano Lopez are through to the second round of the Rogers Cup after seeing off Marcelo Melo and Lukasz Kubot. Murray and Lopez claimed the Fever Tree Championship title on the grass courts of Queen’s Club earlier this summer but looked set for an early exit in Toronto.
The duo saved a match point before going on to claim victory, beating the second seeds 6-7(7-5) 6-3 11-9 in one hour and 56 minutes. “Whenever I play with Andy, it’s a lot of fun,” said Lopez, as reported by Sky Sports. “Today was very special as well. I think we deserved the win because we played well overall.”
Murray and Lopez will face Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin in the next round on Thursday. Three-time singles Grand Slam winner Murray suggested earlier in the summer that he may make a return to singles action at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, which begins on August 11.
It remains to be seen if the Scot will opt to enter that tournament and even if he does, it seems unlikely he will be involved in the singles at the US Open, the final major of the year.
