Garry Monk has emerged as a contender to become the next manager of Newcastle, should Rafael Benitez leave St James’ Park.
Speculation over the future of Benitez is gathering pace with many stories over the weekend suggesting he could walk away from the Magpies and take a position in China.
Should that be the case, a replacement will be needed, and Monk has emerged as a top target for owner Mike Ashley.
Monk has just been axed by Birmingham City following a rumoured fall out with the club’s owners and would be a cheaper option for Ashley if he decided to go down that route.
Newcastle have been linked with the likes of Jose Mourinho in recent times, and the Toon faithful are unlikely to get excited by the prospect of Monk replacing Benitez if, as many expect, the Spanish tactician heads for the exit door.
