Tuesday’s result means it is now back-to-back draws for Barcelona, following their 2-2 against Celta Vigo on Saturday which put them one point behind Real Madrid.
Barcelona on 70 points could go four points behind Madrid if the Los Merenguez beat Getafe on Friday.
Barcelona took the lead on 12 minutes following an own goal by Diego Costa as
his attempt to intercept a corner by Messi deflected off his thigh and into his own net.
In the 19th minute Atletico Madrid equalised through Saul Niguez from the penalty spot after Arturo Vidal tripped Yannick Carrasco inside the box.
Costa’s initial penalty kick was saved by Marc Andre Ter Stegen but a review saw that the German keeper stepped off his line which led to it to be retaken.
Five minutes into the second half Barcelona restored their lead thanks to Messi whose cheeky panenka spot kick fooled Jan Oblak, for his 700th goal.
But in the 62nd minute Atletico drew level for the second time in the game, as Niguez converted again from the penalty spot after Nelson Semedo brought down Carrasco.
