On Wednesday, 29th December 2021, the Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officially announced Jose Peseiro as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.
The announcement was made by the Executive Committee during their meeting held via video conference.
The committee stated that Peseiro will be in Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations as an observer while Austine Eguavoen will be in charge of the team.
Born in Coruche, Portugal, Peseiro had his first stint as a coach in 1992 when he took charge of Uniao Santarem in his homeland.
Between 1994 and 2003 the 61-year-old managed Uniao Montemor, Oriental and Nacional.

In 2003 Peseiro became assistant to current Egyptian coach Carlos Queiroz at Real Madrid and after spending just one season (2003/2004) the pair were relieved of their positions.
After his disappointing time at Madrid, Peseiro returned to Portugal to take charge of Sporting Lisbon, whom he led to the final of the Europa League (known then as UEFA Cup) in 2005. Unfortunately Sporting Lisbon lost 3-1 to CSKA Moscow.
Following spells with Panathinaikos, Rapid Bucuresti and Sporting Braga (where he won the Portuguese League Cup in 2013) Peseiro came to Africa and joined Egyptian giants Al Ahly in 2015. He won the league title despite spending only one season (2015/2016).
Peseiro’s first job at national team level was with Saudi Arabia in 2009 during the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Saudi Arabia failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup and on 10 January 2011, he was sacked after losing the first game in the Asian Cup.
His last national team job was with Venezuela after taking over on February 2020 and led them to the 2021 Copa America where crashed out in the group stage.
On August 2021, he resigned having not been paid for over a year amidst Venezuela’s economic crisis.

Just look at CV….world-class coach LOL
Who do Nigeria!!!
I just feel like puking bro!
See curriculum vitae. Egu is way ahead of this one na. What is wrong with appointing a local coach?
Peseiro will be in Cameroon as an OBSERVER.
I will also be OBSERVING from my living room.
The guy just reminds me of Clarence Seedorf……who came to Egypt (in 2019) for “sight-seeing” with the Indomitable Lions before he japa with him briefcase after that ill-fated Quarter Final against Rohr’s men…sotey Ighalo chop brace sef dat day under him nose LOL
The only difference between Seedorf and Peseiro is that, Seedorf had a glittering career as player…this Peseiro, na fa–fa–fa–faooouul!! LOL
Huhuhu! It is just a free ticket to watch afcon, peseiro is running away
Lwkmd
Peseiro has come to the right country, since it appears he’s used to not being paid. He’ll feel at home in Nigeria.
Until August 2021, Peseiro was the coach of Venezuela. He reportedly resigned having not been paid for over a year.
Pompei brodaman you missed the point. He will be reading The Observer newspaper in Cameroon. I and I never trust these evil NFf. Lolzzzz
Loool.
Na em be say OBSERVER newspaper go sell market wella for this Afcon period ooo.
Me sef, I go dey observe my own from my TV.
THE CUP IS COMING HOME.
Lol. Lmao
This coach CV ain’t good enough for this team, I don’t know who’s deceiving who but u think the technical committee of the NFF are very poor…
Nigeria want world class coach without paying him.
He is certainly better than Eguavon who has never coached club in the level of sporting lisbon.Europa league is NOT the same as local clubs .
The qualification for a team is not entirely dependant on coach .The famed Brazillian coach didn’t remove South Africa from group stages of world cup .
Then why disengaging rohr? This is even enough to discourage SE players.
I feel NFF should have allowed Eguavon to continue in the absence of Amunike. The truth is, this man does not look like someone that can offer us anything.
NFF can’t afford a ‘World-class’ coach, we have never had one, to be honest this is our level. If we truly want to have an option as genuine SuperEagles fans between the options, an affordable foreign coach and our domestic coaches, I’d prefer a sound domestic coach like Finidi, but it’s difficult for me to stick my neck out for any domestic coaches right now. Even if Eguavoen win AFCON with a team he met on ground ego will set in and Amaju will still be controlling him until he leave office. Fans everywhere are already crying fowl about Eguavoen’s first list despite not even holding one training session yet.
Finidi for where? We can be dealing with failure. He is Fatai Osho of Rivers United’s latest wife, just a flash in the pan. Eguavoen has been the most successful local coach having won an Afcon meda and deserves it most, sentiment apart.
Omo9ja, jimmyball and co, here you have it. The one with a better pedigree than Rohr
How is Egu the most successful local coach pls? What did he achieve that Christian Chukwu didnt achieve?
What about Onigbinde?
Oliseh if not for his high handedness and ego would have been the best among this crop of young tacticians. Got Fortuna Sittard promoted and stabilized in the Eredivise before he quit.
He remains Nigeria’s biggest coaching export among those alive today. To coach in the 8th (I hope am correct) best rated league in Europe no be beans o sir.
I am not comfortable with old men coaching SE. Their tactics are mostly outdated. World over, only few 60+ olds are coaching successful teams and nations. Most are tinkered by young men.
On a scale of 1st class, 2:1, 2:2, Pass and f9, I will rate the guy with a pass.
You are serious. Lol!
Finding for where? We can be dealing with failure. He is Fatai Osho of Rivers United’s latest wife, just a flash in the pan. Eguavoen has been the most successful local coach having won an Afcon medal and deserves it most sentiment apart.
How many world class coaches are involved with national teams? Can’t think of many. I will judge him based on the performance of the team when he resumes duty. Hard to judge him with Venezuela as they do not have the calibre of players we have.
Do not be surprised to see mourinho source for Nigerian players based on his boy managing the Nigerian team for Roma….lol. The one “World Class Coach” we got in berti vogts was a collosal failure.Perhaps we should not be quick to judge him and give him a chance.
Ten matches for Venezuela won 1 draw 3 lost 6. Formation 541 this is really madness by Pinnick hiring this disaster again.
He wouldn’t play 5.4.1. with Nigeria.
Venezuela is a small footballing nation in Latin America, they struggle to keep pace with most teams in that region,so a more defensive or conservative approach is just a tactics to protect the team as they can’t go toe to toe with most of their bigger opposition’s unfortunately.
But with the super eagles,it should be a different approach.
I think we should be patient and see his performances first before rating him.
What do you expect? It was Mourinho that recommended him. Mourinho doesn’t play attacking game remember?
Our problem is complex, otherwise why wasting money on this man? Just to be an observer and he will still run away.
Folks, NFF no get mouth as far as the appointment is concerned. Nonsense!
I have been watching and involved football long enough to know that a homegrown coach can lead the Super Eagles… I dont believe in all this average class forign coaches… It used to be a liking for me when I was still encased in the African slave mentality thinking foreign coaches have a certain magic wand… I have vacated that sort of thinking and mindset…
The level of Coaching the likes of Finidi, West, Amuneke, Mutiu and Olofinjana have gotten and been exposed to… any decent and honest ex-international at that level can do the job of coaching Super Eagles perfectly well if they wont compromise themselves…
“If they won’t compromise themselves”.
That’s a huge IF, Jimbo.
There’s another big IF.
If the NFF will allow them to work with a free hand, especially when it comes to player selection.
The NFF remains our biggest problem. We’ve got to fix the NFF.
Seriously dem clowns have done it again. It’s time for our ex internationals players to start running our football house, as da present clowns are clueless and can’t tell from their rite arms to their left arms. Clowns da lot of dem
Clowns will do better than the nitwits in the Glass house. These guys can’t tell the difference between there backsides and their elbows, when it comes to football administration.
Let’s hope it’s fake news or else, someone shld explain to peseiro how naija be na.
I will feel more comfortable with Osimhen playing Afcon on one condition:
If NFF can epp us to provide Osimhen with IRON MAN MASK.
#MASKMAN.
@Pompei, no further story or debate on Osimhen’s AFCON chances. Osimhen has tested positive for covid-19 again on his return to Italy. So case closed
How is Egu ahead of him? Nigerians and delusion of grandeur
I beg oo make una see the CV of a coach these NFF people hire for Naija Super Eagles. Since wey i dey follow W/cup, Saudi Arabia dey show all the time but with this man them fail to show. As for today no body dey hear of Venezuela National Team again bcos of the same man. I really tire with this current football bodies in Naija now.
NFF should see their lives outside now. Look at how Nigerians are mocking the new coach that they just introduced to us in few hours ago lol. Chai Nigerians, I hail you all ooo.
This one may be worst than Oga Rohr. Super Eagles had no links and directions under the world class coach Oga Rohr but this one Kai, I have no clue ooo lolz.
Oga Rohr should be the last foriegn coach that NFF would hire since we have our own that are more qualified to do the job.
The former Oga Rohr followers Nigeria limited will be the happiest people on earth if Eguavoen and this unknown coach falls yakata in Cameroon and fails to qualify for the World Cup.
I won’t blame Oga Rohr deciples for their actions if such a thing eventually happened next year. This our AJĘWOMASAN, the doctor NFF, have no shame and they are have lost focus.
This is quite funny I must say it the way it is kę.
The best thing we can do is to remove Amaju and his company in our football. We have to make a protest on social media if truly we want a change.
Hmmm. Amaju have passing his boundary. This is the best time to take a quick action if we must do well in Cameroon and to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar.
Amaju is the most worst NFF president in the history of Nigeria football⚽️. Shikena. God bless Nigeria!!!
How about a saying that, do not pursue your enemy too far into the bush, or you may not be able to return? Let’s give this new coach a fighting chance. Make his work environment pleasant until he proves not worthy of your trust. You should have known the NFF will hire a coach worse than Rohr before you did your best to get him fired.
Our mum don do. Amaju Pinnick wants to destroy Nigerian football. I am indeed disappointed in the ex-footballers aside from Odegbemi. I don’t know why the likes of Kanu Nwankwo, Austin Okocga, Ikoeba,Garba Lawal, Rufai should not be able to speak out and “compel” the NFF to encourage our national coaches to coach our national team. No foreign coach should know Nigerian players more than our own national coaches. We must learn to promote our own.
I hereby say, NO TO FOREIGN COACHES IN NIGERIA.
When did Eguavouen win an AFCON ?
Afcon medal not trophy. That was what he meant.
If somebody did not go for job hunting how will he land a job?
And are you aware that GENERAL ROHR is 68 years old? He could as well decide to retire from coaching…
Are you also aware that he is super rich? I mean with lots of investment in France. And so don’t need to rush into coaching another team after the SE job?
Or what if he decides to go on a sabbatical? Or is the word sabbatical not in you guys dictionary?
Or what if there is an offer already on the table and he is just weighing them? I mean we all know that GENERAL ROHR is not the talking type like your own Eguavon.
So please let some of these questions cross all you Eguavon fan’s mind before you say if he was that good bla bla bla should have happened..
Besides his SE stats as a coach is there for you to look at…..
He mustn’t get a new job, before you know he is good…
This one past me oo, I completely rest my case, NFF thanks for bringing somebody as a foreign coach just to spite us.
NFF has shown how clueless they have been since this Amaju Picnic guy took over. They have turned our football to a laughing stock. Take a good look at the other age-grade national teams, Under 17, 21 and 23. When last did we qualify for a major tournament? Amaju’s led NFF, went on a drive to get foreign born players, no doubt, it was a good move, having been able to get the likes of Aribo, Aina, Balogun, Dessers etc but totally neglecting our local football development will come back to hurt us in years to come.
I read about the 40 man list on soccernigeria.com and to my greatest dismay, Dessers was not on the list, Lookman was on the list but how John Noble and Nwakali made the final list, sha I hope they put up a performance in Cameron to justify their shady inclusion.
In conclusion, I think it is high time, proper professionals like Nwankwo Kanu, Victor Ikpeba, Jay Jay, West, Rufai etc are supported to take over NFF. Enough of these politicians who know nothing about football, running our country down and our beloved sports down.
We mustobilize via socoa media and other outlets and shout for the rejection of this no record man.
Pinnick, why na! Is is by force that colonial whiteness must lead us?
Let me play the devil’s advocate; Jose’s CV is almost similar to Gernot’s when he took over the job of the Super Eagles. We all know how that played out…
But I digress. Most world class coaches prefer working at the clubsides rather than national teams;Clubsides are more professional, better facilities and great working conditions and etiquette. More so,the coach have the time necessary to imbibe his playing ideology on the team. Besides, Club sides pay better.
Even so, it would take a lot for a world class coach to work with Nigeria. The negative situations in the country is always on the news. Bad facilities, lack of payment and indebtedness of the employer. The ineptitude of the NFF is well documented.
The only positive that would make anyone work (or made them work)here is the players and the footballing brand, Nigeria . We chip out good players now and then and we do qualify for competitions. Every coach wants that in their CV.
By hiring Peseiro,The NFF simply stated they don’t trust Nigerian coaches! But can we really blame them. Based on precedence, we know how things turns out with Nigerians at the helm of affairs. Nepotism, Corruption always take the bane at some point no matter how skilled they are.
That said, even with my disappointment with the NFF of how they go about things, I can only sit back and see how things turns out; hopefully for Nigeria sake, it turns out good.
We won’t learn, we aren’t ready to learn. This has been the challenge of an average Nigerian be it a public office. Not long ago I specifically requested the Federation to look into the Belgium Blueprint and how it was able to key into its football philosophy and settled within a few years, Belgium is still no1 footballing Nation in the World as we type. What is this you have appointed as a coach? The Cronbach Alpha, a measurement of scale reliability will turn its head on the pages of its book laughing back at us. Wondering if these people are thinking. Peseiro??? A man who wasn’t successful with the Venezuela national team is to Coach the Super Eagles, no, this is a joke taken too far.
I insist that the NFF must resolve itself, go back to the drawing board and look into the prospects of engaging local managers using the Belgium Blueprint as a guide. The Secretary General, Mohammed Sanusi, who sees to the day to day administration has a huge role to play here.
I want to be you’re sensible. Coach Eguavoen is 56yrs old while former Coach Chukwu is past 70yrs old. I am talking about the one with the pedegree and not the high handedness and ego type. Let’s keep sentiment apart otherwise it is difficult to wonder why calling out Chukwu here.
At least they should have contacted someone like Arsene Wenger for advise, though Rohr CV was not better than this before he too Niaja Job… The main reason we always settle for less is because of the controversies that surrounds payments. May be Arsene Wenger himself would have offer to coach us and yet we still have well qualified coaches that are vacant right now eg Nuno Espirito Santo
Who told you. Rohr coach team like Niger, Burkina Faso and Gabon. He even took Gabon to quarter final of Afcons. He had a good football career by playing for club like Bayern, Bordeaux. He equally took Bordeaux to second UEFA cup. He has not been bad with most of the national team he has coached Nigeria inclusive. His records in Nigeria remains the best even though most of you made it look bad. This Pesseiro failed to qualify Saudi Arabia to world cup. Saudi has always being the forefront of Asian football but with him incharge they missed the world cup which is very unusual. Same with Venezuela he failed woefully. This is a man who has been failing with every national team he has handled. Is this all what NFF told us they try to avoid disaster because of hmmmmm
Well said!
And his record at Niger and Burkina Faso?
Why appoint this man when we could have employed either Joachim Low or even Zinedine Zidane given that they currently available!
God help NFF to always do what’s best for Nigerian football.
Many many thumbs up @ Hush. No better way to explain the situation of things. God richly bless you.
@ROYAL, some of You guys are quick to insult people on social media. Why pls? Where is our home training?
Be that as it may, your post never SPECIFIED age or personality. It was a GENERAL assessment. You said “EGUAVOEN is the most successful Nigerian local coach. He won bronze”.
Please tell us how your statement excludes Chukwu?
I only replied you based on the phrase “most successful local coach”.
Probably, you need to rephrase your statement so we can understand the context and import of your angle. Eguavoen is not even in the level of folks like KADIRI IKHANA, SALISU BRIBE YUSUF, OKEY EMORDI etc. These are coaches who won Nigeria league titles and did well on the continent. I can tell you for free that a COACHLESS SE can comfortably make the semi finals of AFCON! Our advantage is we are aleays among the teams to beat in every single AFCON since Nigeria began to participate.
I rate a local coach based on what he achieves with a local side on a consostent basis. Eguavoen failed woefully in all his local teams assignments. His only achievement to date was the bronze medal finish in 2006.
Stay blessed
Thanks @Glory
God’s blessings
Picnicking panic abi na that very foolish pinnick, he is always so foolish in getting it right ✅. Roger Abi na Oga Rohr should have been detached and dispatched immediately after the World Cup where he openly displayed sheer lack of tactics and right team and substitute selection. Rohr fumbling and wobbling was rewarded with contract renewed. Then me bestsport checked out emotionally from completesports.com and comments quarters. Now we are back to Square one. Pinnick is a bloody disgusting disgrace. This further wrong appointment is so ridiculously embarrassing.
They are just satisfy seeing a white man on the bench. The dance of shame will start when we win afcon and we cannot qualify for WC.
