The Citizens lost 2-1 after a late Amad Diallo-inspired comeback from United. Josko Gvardiol had put the hosts ahead with a first-half header but Diallo won a penalty from Matheus Nunes with just minutes remaining.
Bruno Fernandes stepped up to the spot to fire United level before the Red Devils stole a winner less than two minutes later after Ivorian winger Diallo latched on to a long Lisandro Martinez pass, flicking the ball over Ederson and firing in from an angle.
