Mamelodi Sundowns year coach Rulani Mokwena has tipped Nigeria’s Super Eagles as one of the favourites to be crowned AFCON 2023 champions.
The Eagles will begin their quest for a fourth AFCON title when they face Equatorial Guinea in Group A on Sunday.
This will be the first meeting between the Eagles and Equatorial Guinea at the AFCON.
In their three Previous meetings, the Eagles have come out winners.

Speaking on the chances of Jose Peseiro’s men, Mokwena explained why he believes they are one of the favourites to lift the trophy.
“Nigeria will always be favorites because they have several top players and they are never pushovers when it comes to the tournament,” he told Sundowns website.
“Morocco is another team I believe will do well because they have a great coach, a great squad and we saw their exploits at the last World Cup.
“Egypt can also be considered a big threat in the competition as they have the pedigree and know-how to win the title.
“I also tip Ghana and Senegal to be strong contenders and I think Ivory Coast will also make it to the last 8,” the Downs coach said.
He also tipped the players who could take the tournament by storm, saying: “Victor Osimhen is one player who is in great form and we have seen his abilities in front of goal.
“He leads the line confidently and scores lots of great goals and in tournaments like this, you need goals.
“I also think Achraf Hakimi is an exceptional player who can change the course of games in several ways. Mohammed Kudus is another game changer who I expect to impress at the tournament.”
Meanwhile, hosts Côte d’Ivoire defeated Guinea-Bissau 2-0 in the opening game of the tournament on Saturday thanks to goals from Seko Fofana and Jean-Philippe Krasso.

This is actually laughable cos na only this man for the world don come out to back se..
And the man gat no pedigree atall..
All those great football minds dey no even mention se as favourite
@Monkey brain, you talk B4 thinking. How can u say the Coach Rulani has no pedigree? He is one the best coach in Africa and no coach in Nigeria is up to his level. Be careful not to invite Ogun to visit you with your bad belle and baseless utterances
Thank God I talk before thinking. At least there is a thinking..lol but you you dont think before you talk and after you talk..so there is thinking atall..cos if there is, I see no reason why you should be inviting ogun on your fellow man for airing his opinion even on a Sunday…
Can’t you see you are the one inviting Ogun upon yrself already? You want someone or even a team downfall at the expense of individual success.
That is an enemy of progress and a potential enemy of progress is Ogun material .Deal with it!
How many of our local egunje coaches is observant like this coach? The calibre of players he mentioned tells that he is really updated with vast variety of players in the continent doing well for their clubsides. Now ask Peseiro or Salisu and you’ll hear comment. LMAO but Eagles are winning Today!!!!
Monkey Post you spiteful and envious against Super Eagles; Super Eagles have pedigree to win this cup , but it could want playing with style which SE like to play, organization playing, dedication and committment by players, so I think you do not evaluate and you do not know SE a-good , recurred yourself….
To be frank, RSA have quality coaches such as the one above and Pitso. I loved Rulani studio analyses at the last FIFA world cup on SuperSport.
The coach sabi game analysis. Na coach wey go tay in being relevant.
I surprise say Monkey Post say e no no this guy for 2022 analysis.
