Bordeaux forward Josh Maja is determined to grasp the opportunity with both hands after being called up to the Nigeria squad. Manager Gernot Rohr has selected the former Sunderland man for the first time as the Super Eagles take on Ukraine on Tuesday evening.
Born in London, the 20-year-old spent a season in the Sunderland youth set up before making 30 appearances in all competitions and scoring 16 goals for the Wearsiders.
He was prolific in League One last term, bagging 15 from 24 outings in the first half of the campaign before earning a move to the Ligue 1 club in January.

Having scored one goal in seven outings for Les Girondins, Maya then suffered a season-ending knee injury but he has bounced back with one strike in four outings this term.
Rohr was quick to take note and gave him the call, with Maja now eager to prove he is worth his pace in the side. “I am delighted to get my first call-up for Nigeria, this is a big opportunity to show the fans and staff what I can do,” he told Super Eagles channel. “I am going to work my hardest and give my quota to make my family, fans and coaches proud.”
The youngster has been tipped for big things at Bordeaux but has bene used exclusively from the bench so far this season.
However the more he plays and the fitter he gets after that injury issue, the more likely he is to secure regular starting berth under Paulo Sousa
