Harry Kane, has backed the under fire defender, Harry Maguire, labelling him as one of England’s best ever defenders.
Kane stated this while speaking ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League Group A opener between Bayern Munich and Manchester United.
Maguire has come under heavy criticism mostly from United fans following uninspiring performances.
Before the start of the season Maguire was stripped of the captain’s armband by Erik ten Hag.
The former Leicester defender is yet to start for the Red Devils in the Premier League this season.
His only appearance for -Ten Hag’s side was as a substitute in United’s 3-1 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates.
Despite his limited roles for United he keeps getting called up by Three Lions gaffer Gareth Southgate and featured against Scotland and Ukraine in the 2024 European Championship qualifiers.
But Three Lions teammate Kane has jumped to the defence of Maguire describing some of the criticism directed at the defender as unnecessary.
“I think H has come under some really unnecessary scrutiny,” Kane was quoted on talkSPORT.
“Probably been scapegoated a little bit in terms of the way the team has gone over recent times.
“He is a really good friend of mine, he’s a great guy, a really hard-working professional.

“It’s part of our game now, it’s part of football. You get scrutinised all over social media but knowing him, all he will want to do is work harder and improve and stay focused.
“We’re fully behind him in the national team. I know the coach has come out and backed him fully.
“There’s always going to be noise around players but the most important thing is that we have a really strong core with England and that’s the most important thing going into big games and big tournaments.”
Meanwhile, Maguire has not travelled with the United squad to face Kane’s Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
According to the Red Devils Maguire will not be in action through injury.
He is the latest United player to be injured, joining the likes of Raphael Varane, Mason Mount and Luke Shaw on the sideline.
