Newcastle United are believed to have made a move for the highly-rated Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. The 21-year-old has impressed with his efforts in his breakthrough season in the Bundesliga last term and his efforts have not gone unnoticed by clubs in the Premier League.

Reports have suggested Southampton are considering a move for the Frenchman but they will face stern competition from Newcastle, who are also thought to be pushing for a deal. News from across the Channel has suggested the Magpies have already put in a substantial bid for Mateta, thought to be in the region of £20million.
That is unlikely to be enough to secure the services of Mateta, with Mainz believed to value the player at around £30million. Whether Newcastle will go back in for the youngster remains to be seen but rumours connecting the Magpies to the player are unlikely to go away in the near future.
