Newcastle will reportedly battle Liverpool for the signature of Augsburg defender Philipp Max this summer. The northeast outfit completed their first signing of the summer earlier this week after parting with a reported fee of £40million to bring in Joelinton from Hoffenheim.
Steve Bruce is hoping to further strengthen his squad before the deadline on August 8 and Max is understood to be a top target. The Augsburg defender, who made 30 appearances in the Bundesliga last term, has been linked with Liverpool but Newcastle are hoping to beat their rivals to a deal.
The left-back is reportedly available for 20million euros and that could prove to be a stumbling block for the Magpies. Matt Ritchie, Paul Dummett, Kenedy and Javi Manquillo shared left-back duties last season but Bruce wants to bring in a more reliable option.
